Sporting CP vs. Arsenal UEFA Champions League Preview and Prediction
The final eight teams clash in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals this week. Prepare for a highly anticipated bout at the Estadio Jose Alvalade between the Portuguese Liga’s Sporting CP and the Premier League’s Arsenal.
Sporting has reached the quarters for the first time since the 1982/83 season, while the Gunners carry a lot of weight on their shoulders as they aim to win their first ever UCL trophy after reaching this stage seven times.
Sporting CP vs. Arsenal UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal Odds and Betting Trends
This matchup features a rematch of the 2022/23 Europa League Last 16, where Sporting squeezed through to the quarterfinals on penalty kicks. This is the fifth time the two sides have faced off, and while Sporting did go through in that tie just three years ago, they’ve never beaten Arsenal in a single match. Arsenal won the most recent confrontation 5-1 in the UCL League Phase in November 2024.
Despite the varying opinions, Arsenal leads the way in Champions League odds to win the UCL at this stage at +220, with Sporting aiming for a long shot title win at +4500. Even in Lisbon, the Gunners lead the way on the moneyline at -135, with Sporting looking at a potential upset win at +370, with a draw listed at +285 for leg one.
Sporting CP
Sporting have never made it this far in the Champions League, but have astonished fans and opposition with their grit. They destroyed Bodo/Glimt 5-0 in a crazy second-leg comeback victory at home in the UCL Round of 16. Bodo/Glimt had previously beaten Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City. Then, they returned to their domestic league for a dominant 4-1 win over Alverca, showcasing 12 goals in their last five games and nine in their last two. If there were any time to play at their best, now would be it, as Arsenal will not waver, especially defensively.
Sporting’s Luis Javier Suarez comes in set to score on a two-game streak at +275 after netting five already in the Champions League, leading the golden boot race in Portugal with 24 in 25 games. 21-year-old Rafael Nel is the next highest team goal scorer, priced at +450 to give his team the edge at home against the Gunners.
Arsenal
Arsenal seems to have the Premier League on lock, but earning the Champions League trophy would make this season that much sweeter. The Gunners let the opportunity to win extra silverware slip as they lost to Man City 2-0 in the EFL Cup Final and Southampton 2-1 in the FA Cup quarters in their two most recent games, and should be extra fired up to take on lighter opponents in the European competition. While the Gunners lost high-stakes games back-to-back, they’ve still only allowed four goals in their last five games, and their mental focus will shift heavily to the Champions League. Don’t forget, amidst all the trophy losses, the squad still boasts the highest goal difference in both the EPL (39) and UCL (19).
Viktor Gyokeres has shone bright this season with 11 EPL goals, four in the UCL, with one in his last World Cup qualifier match for Sweden and last match for Arsenal in the FA Cup. Expect him to net one here at +200, followed by the team’s Champions League top scorer (six goals) Gabriel Jesus at +240.
UEFA Champions League Quarterfinal Prediction: Who Will Win Sporting CP vs. Arsenal?
Arsenal may have experienced a couple of blunders in tournaments outside their domestic league in their recent matches, but the Champions League trophy means so much more to them than both the EFL Cup and FA Cup. Even in their FA Cup loss to Southampton, they dominated with 24 shots to seven and 64% possession, yet just couldn’t easily get on the scoresheet. And with those two losses under their belt, the squad still put out a positive GD in their last five, and continues to pressure teams with their set plays and resolute defence. Sporting’s offence will have to be otherworldly to break down Arsenal throughout 90 minutes of attrition.
Go with Arsenal to win 2-0 for this one, even in Lisbon territory, as the Gunners are sure to be energized and are by no means expected to lose three in a row, especially now that they’ve got their mistakes out of the way and are so close to a potential UCL Final.
