Spain vs England Prediction, Women’s World Cup Final Odds
La Roja vs the Lionesses. Newcomers to success versus a side that’s flirted with global greatness in the past yet never attained it. It’s Spain vs England in the Women’s World Cup final from Stadium Australia in Sydney.
The big finale is between two deserving sides, so one shouldn’t expect a heavy favourite. England is currently pinned at +170 and Spain at +155 on the World Cup odds. A draw is set at +195, meaning extra time and penalty shootout, if necessary, would decide who lifts the sport’s most illustrious prize.
Spain vs England Betting Analysis Odds
This Women’s World Cup final is an example of how history can be both highly informative but also frustratingly opaque. Sunday is far from the first time Spain and England draw swords in women’s football. The nations have met on 11 occasions already, with the English earning the spoils on six. Spain has won twice and there were three draws.
All that said, neither Spain nor England have partaken in a World Cup final. Furthermore, the Iberian Peninsula nation has skyrocketed to success at this year’s edition. They didn’t even play in any World Cups until 2015. On the flip side, the English have flirted with finals twice already in 2015 and 2019 but had to settle for bronze medal games. Neither side has true finals experience, but one, England, is more seasoned than the other.
Spain
The Spaniards pulled the rug from under Sweden, as had three previous nations in prior semi-finals. Try as they might, the Swedes cannot reach a World Cup final. Scandinavian tears were mixed with Spanish joy on Tuesday in Auckland, New Zealand.
It was a bewitching game, or rather, a bewitching final 10 minutes. Not that the previous 80 lacked drama. Spain largely controlled the pace with 63 per cent ball possession and twice as many attempted shots (13 to six). The tension was exponentially heightened in the 81st minute when sensation Salma Paralluelo made good on a ball that fell to her feet in the box after a failed cross. Her low shot gave Spain a thrilling 1-0 lead…which lasted all of six minutes. Sweden equalized in the 87th when Rebecka Blomqvist was left unmarked in the box and sent a half-volley into the top corner. 1-1.
That tie lasted all of two minutes. A Spain corner eventually went to Olga Carmona’s feet on the perimeter of the designated area and she unleashed a rocket that skimmed the crossbar before falling in. Absolute mayhem for 10 minutes that concluded with a 2-1 Spain victory and a trip to Sunday’s final.
England
England had no easy task on Wednesday either. Not only did pundits believe the English stumbled into the semi-final with unconvincing performances, but the team had to face co-hosts Australia and a sea of Aussie supporters.
We even wrote about how England, despite being a semi-finalist, hadn’t impressed that much. Whatever they had for breakfast that morning, it worked. The Lionesses put on their best show of the tournament, earning a 3-1 win over Australia. The goals were excellent as well. Ella Toone opened the scoring with a beautiful high strike in the 36th minute. But Sam Kerr and Australia couldn’t be pinned down forever. Kerr, the team’s soul, levelled terms on a scorcher from distance in the 63rd minute. Alas, the Matildas’ defence failed them, as a ball than came in high in the 71st was poorly dealt with, which allowed Lauren Hemp to tap in the game winner. Alessia Russo sealed the deal in the 86th on a smooth counter-attack.
Women’s World Cup Final Prediction: Spain vs England
This is extremely difficult to predict. Have England woken up and are finally playing their true game? They have Lauren James back from suspension if they need her. Spain has been special, however, playing magical football in magical moments. As such…
Spain 2-1 England
