Soccer: Toronto and Whitecaps Stung by Comebacks

Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps both saw leads evaporate as potential wins turned to draws in Major League Soccer action on Wednesday. Al Dannity looks back at a night both clubs will rue for missed opportunities.

So much for the boost
Toronto FC could have really done with a win on Wednesday night. Not only have their performances on the field been laughable but three of their players got arrested for a bar fight in Houston at the weekend. The Reds had a chance to take some positives out of their trip to Houston with a point earned against the Dynamo on Wednesday night, their first on the road this season. Even this achievement however will be tinged with regret. The visitors let a 3-1 lead slip, eventually drawing 3-3, meaning Toronto missed out a second MLS win this season.

Will Bruin spoiled the party for the Reds. With Toronto 3-1 up at half-time, Bruin sprang into action after the break, scoring in the 73rd and 90th minutes to secure a share of the spoils for the home team. The result ensure Toronto remain well adrift at the bottom of MLS standings, with 1 win, 1 draw, and 10 losses on the season.

A missed opportunity
Taking seven points from a possible nine would normally be cause for celebration at B.C. Place. For the Vancouver Whitecaps, the way they dropped two points last night will sting hard. The night began in frustrating fashion as the Caps missed a bunch of chances to take the lead. With the game appearing on course for a 0-0 finish, Martin Bonjour struck in the 75th minute to give the Whitecaps the lead. The Red Bulls, who arrived in Vancouver riddled with injuries, fought back bravely and Heath Pearce proved the unlikely source of an equalizer. Pearce scored his first goal in his four year MLS career to earn a point for New York.

The need for new signing Barry Robson was evident throughout Vancouver’s performance. The Whitecaps had 10 shots on goal but just 1 on target. The Caps need a player with Robson’s invention and discipline to create more opportunities and to put Vancouver’s players in better position to make those chances count. The result leaves the Whitecaps just a point clear of fourth place Seattle in the West and four points back from second place San Jose. With a tough road game at the Galaxy coming up, Vancouver will need to remain disciplined before Robson joins the team next month.
