Two great footballing nations are one step closer to World Cup glory.

There are memories and stories aplenty between these two sides. The generation of players has changed, but the desire to get the upper hand still burns bright.

Argentina sits at +102 whereas the Netherlands is +260. A draw, meaning penalties would decide the outcome, is +229, the lowest figure of all four games this round.

Netherlands vs. Argentina Quarterfinals Betting

Netherlands v Argentina

  • Argentina +119
  • Draw +205
  • Netherlands +255

The Albicelestes and Oranje have only crossed paths a total of nine times, three of them being friendlies.

Therein lies the grandeur of each occasion. The stakes always appear to be at their highest. The European giants hold a 4-2-3 edge. Destiny has ordained that five of their meetings have occurred at World Cups. In 1974 Johan Cruyff and his mates thrashed the South Americans 4-0 in the group stage. Four years later they met again in Buenos Aires in the final. The Argentineans exacted vengeance, netting twice in extra time to win 3-1 and capture their first championship in the process.

France 1998 was the setting of their next clash, also in the quarter-finals. A fiery affair saw both Arthur Numan and Ariel Ortega handed red cards. Dennis Bergkamp scored one of the tournament’s iconic goals in the 90th minute, granting the Dutch a 2-1 victory. Flash forward to Germany 2006 when the sides played a scoreless draw that decided who won their group. Finally, in Brazil 2014, they faced each other in the semi-finals. The slightly subdued tilt extended to penalties, which Argentina won.

Netherlands

When one thinks of the Netherlands, attacking football with slick, precise passes is typically what comes to mind. Louis van Gaal announced to spectators of their Round of 16 contest against the U.S. that they have a few tricks up their sleeve.

In a surprising twist, it was the Americans who possessed the ball much more (58% vs 42%), not to mention attempted more shots toward the goal (17 vs 8), with more arriving on target (8 vs 6). Yet, it was Memphis Depay, Daley Blind, and Denzel Dumfries all contributing with goals that ultimately demonstrated the Netherlands was in fact the superior squad. The 3-1 victory was as comfortable as it gets given most of the key statistics favoured the losing side. Mind games were played. The Dutch knew all they had to do was absorb some pressure and strike at the appropriate moment. While that is easier said than done for many units, the Netherlands has the quality to execute such a tactic.

Argentina

A World Cup that began in such worrisome, calamitous fashion has seen the South American heavyweights make their way into the quarter-finals. It hasn’t always been easy. The opening salvo against Saudi Arabia resulted in the shock of the tournament, one that can be forgiven should Lionel Scaloni guide his side to its 3rd World Cup title. Mexico and Poland proved beatable opponents as Argentina stacked identical 2-0 wins.

The Round of 16 match with Australia proved to be a quirky one. The South Americans still won, but the 2-1 score-line belied one or two nervy moments towards the end. Messi scored a typically classy goal, with Julian Alvarez providing the winner early in the second half. Messi’s supporting cast has been good this tournament, with Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister proving vital in several games.
