Montreal Impact

It’s been a tale of two seasons for the Montreal Impact. In the first act, Montreal struggled to score, defend and compete and went winless in their first five matches, scoring just twice over that span. The Impact struggled to stay above water until major changes came in August when coach Frank Klopas was sacked in favour of Mauro Biello and Didier Drogba was brought in to spark a sagging offence.

Those moves injected new life into the team as Montreal went 7-2-2 after Drogba arrived, culminating with a win over Toronto FC on MLS Decision Day to clinch home field advantage in the knockout round of the playoffs.

Drogba’s impact can’t be overstated. He scored 11 times in 11 appearances, but he’s also helped this team all over the pitch. His energy and confidence finally has the Impact playing up to their ability.

Toronto FC

TFC’s greatest strength is attacking at every opportunity. With Sebastian Giovinco, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Benoît Cheyrou, Toronto scored 56 goals in the regular season which was second only to the New York Red Bull.

When the Reds are on their game, they can be very difficult to beat – especially if they get on the board first. However, despite the big names and fat contracts, TFC does struggle at the back. Toronto’s last line of defence has rotated through a pile of players at the back without much success.

The other major concern for Toronto is playing on the road where the Reds went  4-10-3 as visitors this season and hasn’t won a road game since June.

MLS Playoffs Prediction

This is a case of one team coming together at the right time with the right players in the right roles and another squad that might have the right players, but hasn’t found the right mix of chemistry yet. While the Reds have a lot of big names, they don’t play as well together as Montreal does at this point. As long as Evan Bush is able to fend off the early attack from TFC, the Impact should take over eventually. Stade Saputo has been a different animal lately and the crowd should play a factor.

Score: Montreal Impact 2, Toronto FC 1.
