MLS: Whitecaps coach Rennie denies Kenny Miller rumours
As far as Martin Rennie and Kenny Miller are concerned, there’s no way Vancouver Whitecaps designated player is leaving the team, despite persistent rumours that say otherwise.
The British press has recently reported that Miller, who is making $1.13 million with Vancouver this season, may return to play with his former team Rangers FC. Apparently Miller’s international teammate Kris Boyd told the Evening Times Miller was leaving the Whitecaps.
“I speak to Kris every other week through text message or on the phone,” Miller told reporters. “But regards to that particular rumour, no, I haven’t spoken to him about that.”
The Scotsman has been hampered by a hamstring problem all season that has kept him out of all but three games. The quality is certainly still there as Miller scored twice in those three matches.
“It’s just an example of another rumour, and [due to the club’s transfer embargo] it couldn’t have ever been true,” Rennie told reporters Thursday. “It’s just something you deal with all the time, and that’s a story that’s come and gone a lot over the past few months.”
Meanwhile, this isn’t a distraction the Whitecaps need with Vancouver’s second leg of the Canadian Championship against Montreal Impact next week. Vancouver earned a 0-0 draw in the first leg, but hopes to have Miller back in the lineup Wednesday.
“I’m contracted to Vancouver until the end of the season,” Miller added. “It’s as simple as that. My focus in the last six weeks has been to get fit and get back on that field and help us produce results, firstly hopefully on Wednesday night by winning the [Canadian Championship].”
Miller was supposed to revitalize Vancouver’s attack last season but managed just two goals in 13 matches.
