Hungary vs. Portugal: Euro 2020 Betting Odds

Defending Euro champions Portugal weren’t given any breaks in the Euro 2020 group stage.  They’ve been paired with the last two World Cup winners, France and Germany, and their first game is in Budapest against a tough Hungary team.

Portugal is a -264 favourite to win this game on the soccer odds, while Hungary is a heavy +648 home underdog.  A draw is listed at +345.

Hungary vs. Portugal Odds

The Under is a slight -128 favourite at 2.5 goals for this game, while the Over is at -104.  Portugal’s odds climb to -714 on ‘draw no bet’ with Hungary at +390.  Cristiano Ronaldo is the easy +285 favourite to score first and a -115 favourite to score at any time.  As a team, Portugal is -263 to score first and Hungary is +245.  No goals in the games is +1000.  The favoured exact result is a 1-0 Portugal win, sitting a +370.

Hungary

Hungary had arguably the worst possible qualifying round draw of any team in this tournament.  The little bit of solace they can take, is home field advantage in their first two games.  With nine players from Budapest, don’t underestimate the importance of home field advantage.  Marco Rossi has guided this team to an undefeated record in their last 11 matches and they’ve only failed to score in one of the 15 home games since Rossi took over.

The biggest hit to this team is the absence of 20-year-old midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, who will miss the tournament with an adductor strain.  Szoboszlai was the player who got Hungary into the tournament by scoring two minutes into stoppage time of a qualifying game against Finland in November to give Hungary a 2-1 win.

With Szoboszlai out, team captain Adam Szalai will be the focal point of Hungary in the qualifying round.  Szalai has 23 goals in 70 international appearances, but with only four goals in 20 club appearances, Hungary could be in trouble.

Portugal

Portugal would love to copy Spain’s back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012.  You can’t count this team out, as they drew all three of their group stage matches in 2016 and they didn’t win a match in regulation until the semi-finals (they needed extra time to beat Croatia and penalties to beat Poland).  Portugal was a bit of a surprise winner in 2016, and with such a difficult group stage this time around, you can’t exactly call them a favourite in this tournament.

You obviously can’t talk about this team without mentioning Ronaldo.  He’s led this team for years and he’s also on the verge of history.  Ronaldo is six goals away from breaking Ali Daei’s world-record 109 career international goals.

It’s going to be just a little bit tougher for Ronaldo, however, after defender Joao Cancelo had to leave the team on Sunday after a positive COVID test.  Diogo Dalot replaced Cancelo in the lineup and Nelson Semedo should replace him in the starting lineup.  With extremely difficult matches against France and Germany on the horizon, this is a must-win for Portugal.
