Team Canada
Christine Sinclair saved Canada in the club’s Women’s World Cup opener by converting a late penalty to put China away 1-0. Now, with a win tonight, Canada will be guaranteed a spot in the knockout stage of the tournament. The Canadians left a lot to be desired in their opening match though. Canada outshot China 14-5 but couldn’t get the final touch they needed before earning the late penalty. Coach John Herdman should know exactly what Team Canada is up against tonight after coaching New Zealand for six years before joining on with Canada.
Woman to watch:
Sophie Schmidt, midfield. If New Zealand wisely marks Christine Sinclair closely up front, Schmidt could find lanes from midfield. She narrowly missed a goal against China.
Quote of note:
“Very clearly, we’re a better team … And I think quality for quality, we’re a better team than New Zealand. And if we connect and we connect like we did against China for periods and we improve on some things and we live the game plan, Canada should win this game. I said this right from the onset, we should win this group.” – John Herdman
New Zealand
This is a team that will come out hungry against its former head coach. New Zealand is slumping through a 10-match winless skid and definitely needs a result here against Canada to keep its tournament hopes alive. However, history isn’t on their side. The only World Cup point New Zealand has earned was a draw with Mexico back in 2011.
Woman to watch:
Hannah Wilkinson, striker. Wilkinson is only 23 but already has 22 international goals to her credit and is the heartbeat of New Zealand’s attack.
Quote of note:
“To be honest, as a team, we haven’t spoken about John at all. We’re just looking at Canada as a team. We’re going to use what we know as an advantage.” – midfielder Annalie Longo.
Prediction:
Canada 2, New Zealand 0
