England vs Haiti Prediction: 2023 Women’s World Cup Odds
The Euro 2022 champions enter the tournament as the fourth-ranked national squad by FIFA. Haiti, ranked 53rd, makes its World Cup debut.
The veteran Lionesses are therefore pinned as intimidating -10000 favourites on the World Cup odds to Les Grenadières’ +4,900. Clearly, this is an uphill battle for the Haitians.
England vs Haiti Betting Analysis
There isn’t a whole lot to say about Haiti at World Cups since this is their first time at the big dance. They’ve tussled with their regional rivals more often at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, making five appearances since 1991, with the best finish also coming in ’91, that being fourth place. Their odds to win the tournament are +50000.
It’s a completely different story for the Lionesses, who have the third-best odds to win it all at +459. They placed fourth the last time around in 2019 and are coming off one of the programme’s greatest successes last summer at the Euros, which they won. They also finished in third place at the 2015 World Cup, so this is a nation that’s come very close to touching glory in recent years.
England
A lot has happened in the 12 months since England captured the 2022 Euro championship. Consider that Beth Mead, Fran Kirby, and Leah Williamson will miss the games due to injury. Others have retired from international play.
Then there have been mediocre results in preparatory friendlies in recent months. A 0-0 draw with Portugal and a 2-0 defeat to Australia showed signs of a team that needs a jolt to get up for these big games. They aren’t lacking in quality, that’s for sure. Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh and Bayern Munich’s Georgia Stanway look to control the game in the middle of the park. The former had a great season in Spain. Much ink has been spilled about Chelsea defender Lauren James, who helped the side win major trophies this past club campaign. Even without the injured players and retirees, England has the skill and leadership to make a serious push at this World Cup.
Haiti
This brings us to Haiti. No one is paying much attention to Les Grenadières. To be fair, they aren’t a big football nation and 2023 marks their World Cup debut, so few people probably know a lot about them anyways.
All that said, they’ve earned the right to be here. They took care of business in World Cup qualifier playoff matches against Senegal (a 4-0 drubbing) and Chile (a close 2-1 victory). While the preparatory friendlies haven’t all gone their way (one win, two defeats), they were pitted against stiffer competition. Eyes will be on Melchie Dumornay, known as “Corventina”. The Lyon midfielder and she steps up big time whenever adorned in her country’s colours. Seven goals in 13 games at the senior level and 28 goals in 34 games at all international levels combined.
This is a young team. Not many squads go into this big a battle with a captain who is only 24 years old (Nérilia Mondésir). This could work either way. The inexperience sinks them or they boldly play with house money.
