England vs. Denmark Prediction: Euro 2020 Semifinals Betting Odds
With the rest of Euro 2020 set to go from Wembley Stadium in London, the quest continues for England to not only win their first-ever European Championship, but to do it in front of home fans. The Three Lions, however, won’t have an easy path to the European crown as they’ll meet a tough Danish side in the semifinals on Wednesday. The winner will face either Italy or Spain in the Final at Wembley on Sunday.
England is a -164 favourite to win on the soccer odds, with Denmark +442 dogs. A regulation-time draw is +269.
England vs. Denmark Betting Odds
England comes in as the favourite to strike first in the match at -192. Denmark is +206 to score first, while no goals in regulation-time is a +704 longshot. At +213, England only trails Italy (+199) as the favourite to win the tournament out of the last four teams. Denmark has the longest odds at +1083.
England
In their only match of the tournament outside Wembley, a surging England hammered Ukraine 4-0 in the quarterfinals in Rome. It took just four minutes for Harry Kane to score the first of his two goals in the match. Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson added second half strikes. Even after passing their toughest test against Germany in the Round of 16 and a blowout win in the quarters, there’s still a lot of work to be done. The team is positioned well though, and they haven’t allowed a goal in seven straight matches across all competitions. The early tournament offensive concerns also seem to be alleviated. England’s win against Ukraine equalled their largest margin of victory ever in a major tournament knockout match.
Despite manager Gareth Southgate’s history of match-to-match formula adjustments, it doesn’t look like he’ll tinker too much with the 4-2-3-1 setup that was so successful against Ukraine. Bukayo Saka is expected to be back at full health and start on Wednesday. If Saka experiences a setback, Jadon Sancho will likely start. Maguire, Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips all avoided bookings against Ukraine that would have kept them out of this game, so Henderson likely won’t be in the starting XI despite scoring his first career international goal in the quarters.
The main concern in this match is how easy it would be for England to overlook the Danes. Next to teams like Germany, Denmark doesn’t look as dangerous and it could be tempting for the Three Lions to look ahead to the Final. Still, there’s no reason to doubt this lineup as they’ve positioned themselves nicely to make English football history.
Denmark
What started out as a nightmare with the Christian Eriksen situation, has turned into an unexpected run, deep into Euro 2020 for Denmark. After crushing Wales 4-0 in the Round of 16, the Danes took out the Czech Republic 2-1 in the quarters. It was Thomas Delaney and Kasper Dolberg’s goals that put Denmark through to the semi’s for the first time since their only European Championship win in 1992. With 11 goals, this is also the highest scoring Danish team in any major tournament. It was actually a penalty goal from Eriksen that gave the Scandinavian side a win the last time they faced England, which was in last year’s Nations League. If that match is any indication of what to expect on Wednesday, this could be a much tighter contest than a lot of people assume.
Outside of Eriksen, who looks like he’s well on the road to recovery, Denmark isn’t experiencing any major injury issues. After being limited to a bench appearance against the Czechs because of a minor injury, Yussuf Poulsen is expected back at full health. Poulsen will likely be up against Dolberg for a spot in the starting XI. Daniel Wass is also back to full health and will compete with Jens Stryger Larsen to start on the right. Despite more options for this match, it’s unlikely manager Kasper Hjulmand will change the starting XI for Wednesday.
This Danish team clearly shouldn’t be overlooked. They’re going to put up a difficult fight and force England to work for everything. This looks like the team that will finally breakthrough England’s defence, so how the English respond could determine this match. With a chance to play spoiler to England in front of English fans, Denmark has a legitimate shot to win this match.
