Tuesday afternoon’s matchup at the National Football Stadium in Bratislava, Slovakia marks the Canadians’ second friendly outing since wrapping up CONCACAF World Cup qualifying earlier this year. With their victory over Qatar, the Canadians have now claimed victory in nine of 12 contests across all competitions, but have failed to tally consecutive victories over their past six outings. Last week’s loss to Iran marked the first time that Uruguay had seen action since June, and put the brakes on a seven-match unbeaten streak across all competitions, during which they kept clean sheets on six occasions. Despite their recent dominance, La Celeste have struggled to produce consistent results in friendly play, tallying consecutive wins just once during a middling 6-4-5 win-draw-loss run.

Canada

While one of the biggest objectives of this final round of friendlies before the World Cup has been evaluating young talent and players committed to European clubs, it was two of the squad’s biggest stars that led the way in last week’s victory over Qatar. Leading scorer Cyle Larin and Jonathan David both found the back of the net inside the first 13 minutes to provide all the scoring on the day. And with the Canadians in control, most of the squad’s regulars were subbed out after halftime, including Larin, David, and Alphonso Davies. Canada’s steady performance against Qatar extends an impressive run, during which the squad has allowed just seven total goals over their past 15 in all competitions. It also marked the sixth time in nine appearances that goalkeeper Milan Borjan has not allowed a goal.

Uruguay

Uruguay will be without one of their biggest stars when they hot the pitch in Bratislava, as Edison Cavani remains sidelined by injury. This squad maintains loads of firepower, even without Cavani. The question is how many of those big guns will see action on Tuesday. Like Canada in their match with Qatar, Uruguay used last week’s date with Iran to take a long look at other potential members of their World Cup squad, cutting the day short for both Rodrigo Betancur of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri. However, they can expect to face Uruguay’s best in goal, with Sergio Rochet expected to be between the pipes in search of a seventh straight shutout.
