These teams have met just twice, with Uruguay winning both games, including a 2-0 friendly in September 2022. Uruguay’s 15 Copa America championships is tied with Argentina for the most of any country. They last won in 2011 and reached the quarterfinals in the last two tournaments.

Jonathan David and Jacob Shaffelburg are Canada’s only goalscorers at the Copa America. David, who is a +375 anytime scorer on Saturday, scored in Canada’s 1-0 group stage win against Peru. Shaffelburg scored against Venezuela in the quarterfinals and is listed as a +425 anytime scorer.

Uruguay has had seven different goalscorers in the tournament. Darwin Nunez and Maximiliano Araujo share the team lead with two goals apiece. Nunez is a +100 anytime scorer against Canada, while Araujo is +220.

Canada

Entering the Copa America at No. 48 in the FIFA World Rankings, Canada will surely see their stock rise after the tournament. Les Reds ran into No. 1 ranked Argentina in the semifinals, losing 2-0 against Lionel Messi and co. for the second time this tournament. Despite the loss, Canada has impressed at the Copa America, making it further than fellow CONCACAF members Mexico and host USA as well as five-time champion Brazil. Regardless of the result on Saturday, Canada has plenty of momentum to build on ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host with Mexico and the United States.

The only Canadian injury news is the broken tibia suffered by Inter Milan winger Tajon Buchanan during training. Shaffelburg has filled in admirably for Buchanan, but Jesse Marsch may elect to move Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies up to the left flank to generate more offensive opportunities. David (27 career international goals) and Cyle Larin (29) are Canada’s top two all-time goalscorers on the mens side and they will continue to lead the attack.

Uruguay

Uruguay, ranked No. 14 in the world, dominated the group stage with wins over Panama, Bolivia and the United States. Their nine goals in the group stage was three more than any other team in the tournament. After beating Brazil on penalties in the quarterfinals, chaos ensued following Uruguay’s loss against Colombia in the semifinals. Nunez was seen climbing in the stands and fighting Colombian fans, with Uruguay claiming the fans were harassing players’ families. Despite other players also jumping in the stands, there’s been no suspensions handed out as of Friday afternoon.

Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo has been ruled out of the third-place game with a muscle injury. Rodrigo Bentancur is doubtful to play after leaving the semifinals with a leg injury and looking visibly in pain. Guillermo Varela and Nicolas de la Cruz are both suspended from Saturday’s contest and there’s still a chance Nunez could face a ban from the match for his part in the brawl against Colombia. If Nunez is suspended, Uruguay’s all-time leading goalscorer, Luis Suarez (68 goals), will likely draw into the starting XI.
