Canada vs. Jamaica: CONCACAF W Championship Semifinal Odds
Canada has truly looked like defending Olympic champions during this 2022 CONCACAF W tournament, defeating Trinidad and Tobago, Panama and Costa Rica on their path to the semifinals.
Those three points set up Canada, as well as two-time defending Women’s World Cup champion United States, as automatic qualifiers for next year’s World Cup. The semifinals on Thursday will see the Americans face off against Costa Rica and Canada playing Jamaica.
Canada vs. Jamaica Betting Odds
The winner of next Monday’s final is guaranteed a 2024 Paris Olympic berth. The runner-up and third place teams will meet in a playoff next year to set up another Summer Games qualifier.
Unsurprisingly, USA and Canada are the favourites to meet in this tournament’s final on Monday, July 18.
The Canadians are easy -526 favourites in this semifinal matchup against Jamaica on Thursday. As of this writing, the Jamaican club are +1300 underdogs and the two teams are +440 to earn a draw.
Team Canada
By far their most challenging matchup of this tournament so far, Canada faced Costa Rica in their third game of the CONCACAF tourney. Costa Rica had yet to be scored on in their previous games, so the Canadians had to apply intense pressure to their two goals past the Costa Rican netminder.
It was Jessie Fleming who got on the board first, scoring in the fifth minute of the game. Next up was a beautiful finish by Sophie Schmidt in the 70th which would be the last goal score in the 2-0 final.
A great deal of the win for Team Canada has to be credited to the incredible work of central defenders Vanessa Gilles and Kadeisha Buchanan, who simply would not let the Costa Rican offense get going, even in the second half when the team seemed to be doubling their efforts.
Team Jamaica
It was a very dominant showing for the Jamaican women’s team, as three players scored four times to shut out Haiti. Trudi Carter scored in the 26th, captain Khadija Shaw got two goals, in the 59th and 70th minute, and Drew Spence scored in the 79th to seal the deal for the “Reggae Girlz” as they beat Haiti 4-0.
It was the second time in history that a Caribbean team has qualified for a Women’s World Cup as the team claimed the last semifinal spot in this tournament.
The win also guarantees Team Jamaica a spot in the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Prior to the matchup against Haiti, the clubs honored a moment of silence for Jedine Carr, a player for Jamaica’s national U-18 team who was killed last week on her way to a training practice.
