Cameroon vs. Brazil Betting Analysis
A Cameroonian win does not guarantee a pass to the next round. If the Swiss defeat Serbia, all is lost. If the Swiss and Serbia draw, goal differentials between Cameroon and Switzerland matter. Should Cameroon and Serbia win, then the goal differential between those two will determine the outcome
The teams met at 2 previous World Cups: 1994 and 2014. Both games were easily won by the boys from Brazil: 3-0 and 4-1. Les Lions Indomitables’ lone success was of some significance. It came at the 2003 Confederations Cup when Cameroon snuck by 1-0.
The last time Cameroon was in a similar position was in 2002. They entered the final group match with 4 points, but fate scheduled them against the Germans, who won 2-0. Discouraging statistic: Cameroon has never won a third group stage game. Even the one time they had already qualified for the round of 16 (1990), they were trampled on 4-0 by the Soviet Union.
Brazil hasn’t fumbled a final group game since 1998, when they fell to Norway 2-1. By then they had already earned a place in the next round. The defeat didn’t dispirit them since they ended up playing the final that year. Moral of the story: Brazil usually wins even when they don’t have to.
Cameroon
What led the Lions to even be in this position was one of the most fantastic performances in the side’s World Cup history.
Game 2 saw Riogobert Song’s men take on Serbia. The African side took a first-half lead off a corner kick that fell to the center-back Castelleto’s foot for a tap-in. In the blink of an eye Serbia roared back with three goals, two near the end of the first 45 minutes, with star Mitrovic netting early in the second half. Cameroonian frowns turned upside down in three minutes. On the counter-attack Vincent Aboubakar sent a cheeky lob over the keeper who came out to challenge and, moments later, he crossed a lovely pass to Bayern Munich man Choupo-Moting to level. Final score: a breathless 3-3. Who says draws are boring?
Brazil
It was tricky against Switzerland in the second group stage game. No one believed the European side would come out flying and engage the Brazilians in a free-flowing affair, but they proved to be maddingly stubborn in defence on most of the night.
A sluggish, slow first half suggested that Tite’s side would have to kick things up a notch if they were to secure an early place in the knockout phase. It almost happened in the 64th minute when Richarlison believed he had netter his 3rd of the tournament, only for VAR to determine an offside position. Brazil eventually broke Swiss hearts in the 83rd on a play worthy of “joga bonito.” Vini Jr. sent a short pass from the left to Thiago Silva who one-touched it forward to Casemiro, the latter sent a half-volley from about 15 yards out into the top left corner.
