Canada vs. South Africa
Canada finished second in Group B following a 2-1 loss to Switzerland on Wednesday, which lines them up to face the second-place team in Group A.
It was assumed the second-place finisher in Group A would be South Korea, but they fell 1-0 in an upset against South Africa on Wednesday night. On paper it’s a huge break for Canada as South Africa entered the World Cup at No. 60 in the FIFA world rankings, while South Korea is No. 25 and Canada is No. 30.
Canada lost their only other previous meeting against South Africa, 2-0, but that was a 2007 international friendly.
Canada and South Africa will meet at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. Les Rouges opened as early -135 favourites to win, while South Africa is pegged as a +380 underdog.
The Canadians will have some major lineup decisions. Most important is team captain Alphonso Davies, who didn’t play in the group stage. Manager Jesse Marsch said he will be available in the Round of 32, but Marsch also said the same thing about the group stage then admitted after Canada’s loss to Switzerland that Davies was used purely as a decoy.
There’s also a question about whether to start Stephen Eustaquio. He wasn’t in the starting XI against Switzerland because of muscle tightness, but he provided a noticeable spark when he came on in the 54th minute.
Canada is already missing Ismael Kone, who suffered a broken leg the team’s historic 6-0 win over Qatar last week.
