2026 FIFA World Cup Group B preview, betting odds, prediction

Group B features a handful of what I call disruptors: teams that aren’t expected to go too far, but will most likely pull off at least one upset in the knockout rounds. You have a mix of European steadiness with Switzerland, North American ambition with one of the tri-hosts, Canada, a true toss-up with Bosnia & Herzegovina, and the last World Cup host in Qatar.

The Swiss are rightful favourites here, a consistent side that routinely reaches the knockout stage. Canada will enjoy massive home support in just their third-ever, and second straight, World Cup appearance. Bosnia & Herzegovina returns for the first time since 2014 and is the group’s most unpredictable squad. Qatar is the doormat. Without the home support they enjoyed in 2022, the weakest side on paper will have to fight to avoid finishing last.

Group B odds

At -125, Switzerland is the clear favourite to win the group, followed by Canada at +225, Bosnia & Herzegovina at +333, and Qatar at +3300. Switzerland’s experience and defensive organization make it the safe pick. However, Canada’s home advantage could give them the boost they need as one of the world’s most improved sides looks to make a statement with a group win.

Canada preview and analysis

As co-hosts, Canada will have massive crowd support during its group-stage games in Toronto and Vancouver. The United States advanced out of the group stage as hosts in 1994, and Canada is in a similar position 32 years later.

Juventus’s Jonathan David and Villareal’s Tajon Buchanan lead a side that should be dangerous on the counter, but may have to win a couple of shootouts with questionable defensive organization.

The biggest question here is the health of Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. He suffered a left hamstring injury in a Champions League match in early May, and the sprint is on to accelerate his 4-to-6-week recovery period. The Canadians are +175 to reach the Round of 16. That should be their ultimate goal. Anything beyond is gravy.

Bosnia & Herzegovina preview and analysis

Bosnia & Herzegovina could finish dead last in the group or reach the quarterfinals. This is a talented and inconsistent side that finished third in their group in their only other World Cup appearance in 2014.

Edin Džeko was on that team and scored in a 3-1 victory over Iran. The veteran helped Schalke 04 earn promotion to the Bundesliga, and now he and Stuttgart’s Ermedin Demirović provide the attacking threat for their country.

They are +250 to finish bottom of the group, and -200 to qualify for the knockout rounds. If they do advance, they are one of those sides you’d expect to lose, 3-0, that destroys your country’s dreams in penalties.

Qatar preview and analysis

This team stinks. In 2022, Qatar joined South Africa (World Cup 2010) as the only host nations to fail to advance out of the group stage. The South Africans at least won and finished with four points. Qatar lost to Ecuador, Senegal, and the Netherlands, finishing with zero points.

They are -145 to finish bottom of the group, and they are one of the safer bets in the entire tournament to do so. The team lacks depth and quality against top opposition. You’d be better off buying a lotto ticket.

Switzerland preview and analysis

The Swiss are the clear favourites of this group. They are also +450 to reach the quarterfinals and +1100 to reach the semifinals. At least one dark horse seems to reach the final four every World Cup, and Switzerland is an attractive option to consider here.

Switzerland has advanced to the knockout rounds in each of the past three World Cups and reached the quarterfinals of the past two UEFA European Championships in 2020 and 2024. With Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka, Inter Milan’s Manuel Akanji, and AS Monaco’s Breel Embolo leading the way, they easily have the chance to continue that recent success.

One important question is how Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel will perform as a replacement for stalwart Yann Sommer in goal.

2026 FIFA World Cup Group B Prediction: Switzerland  (-125)

The June 24 battle between Switzerland and host Canada at BC Place in Vancouver should determine the Group B winner. The Swiss’ experience and past success in major tournaments establish them as the clear favourites here. They grind out results, and they are dependable in the group stage.

Barring a major surprise, Switzerland should top the group and advance comfortably.

Best Bet: Switzerland to win Group B (-125)
