Morrissey left the game early in the second period and did not return. He logged 7:10 of ice time across 13 shifts before leaving with the unknown injury.
The Calgary native played on a pairing with Colton Parayko. There was little disruption to the lineup as Canada opted to dress seven defencemen, with Cale Makar, Devon Toews, Shea Theodore, Thomas Harley, Drew Doughty and Paryko finishing the game.
Posting 42 points (10G, 32A) in 56 games with the Winnipeg Jets this season, Morrissey is expected to be a big part of Canada’s Olympic team. He played three games for Canada at last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off, but didn’t record a point. He also missed the championship game with an illness.
“Representing Canada at the highest level is a dream come true,” Morrissey said in an interview last month. “To go to the Olympic Games, it’s so much bigger than just hockey.”
Team Canada
Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Travis Sanheim was a healthy scratch against Czechia. Sanheim, who was also on the 4 Nations team, has 24 points (6G, 18A) in 56 games this season, while leading the Flyers in average ice time per game (24:02).
Canada now turns their attention to Switzerland on Friday. The Swiss opened their tournament with a 4-0 shutout over France. You can see our full game preview and score prediction here.
