Zach Hyman
Hyman had surgery on May 28 after injuring his wrist in a collision with Mason Marchment during the first period of Edmonton’s 4-1 Game 4 win over Dallas in the Western Conference Final.
It was a big blow to the depth of Edmonton’s lineup as Hyman had five goals and 11 points in 15 playoff games prior to the injury.
The Oilers went on to lose to Florida in the Stanley Cup Final for the second year in a row and Hyman finished the year in the press box. The 33-year-old still finished the playoffs first in hits with 111.
“It was miserable,” Hyman said about being out of the lineup and watching the rest of the playoff run.
“It’s very horrible, very hard. No matter what you’re stressed whether you’re up or down. You have no control. You’re helpless.”
“At the same time you’re trying to keep it all together and be supportive for the guys who are playing. So when I wasn’t around them I was a stress case, and when I was I just tried to be an emotional support system, anchor for those guys.”
Team Canada radar
Hyman still has a brace on his right wrist, but he’s been able to skate and train for the upcoming season.
A good start to the year is crucial for Hyman if he wants a shot at making Canada’s roster for the upcoming Milan Olympics. He was one of 26 forwards invited to Canada’s Olympic orientation camp despite having no exact timeline for a return to the lineup.
The Oilers open their season at home on Oct. 8 against provincial-rival Calgary.
