NHL Odds and Betting Analysis
In the last number of years this has been a lopsided affair in favour of the Winnipeg Jets. Entering this game Saturday night, the Jets have won eight straight games (4-1 in Dallas) against the Stars, and nine out of the last 10 games. Last season the Jets swept the season series and in the process only allowed eight goals against in those four games. Connor Hellebuyck played in three of the four games allowing five goals against. The Stars are also 1-8 in their last nine games following a win.
Winnipeg Jets
The Jets continued where they left off last season, with another key victory against a division rival. This time it was a 5-1 against the Blues. Patrik Laine opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period and later in the third the Jets blew open the gates, scoring four unanswered goals to take the game. The Jets’ top line of Scheifele, Wheeler, and Connor chipped in for two goals and six points. Jets LW Kristian Vesalainen, the team’s 2017 first-round pick, picked up an assist in his NHL debut. He logged 8:12 of ice time. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made a number of key saves, including robbing Blues newcomer Ryan O’Reilly in the first period. He stopped 40-of-41 shots to earn the win. Last season they were 15-9-2 against the Central division. Two of their next three games will be against the Central including Saturday night in Dallas. Of note, defenceman Dmitry Kulikov was a healthy scratch in game one. He was one of the Jets’ big free agent signings two summers ago.
Dallas Stars
The Stars gave rookie Head Coach Jim Montgomery something he will never forget, his first NHL win, and it was an impressive one. Behind Ben Bishop’s 30-save performance, the Stars blanked the visiting Arizona Coyotes 3-0. After failing to score in the first period, the Stars struck quickly in the second period, with three unanswered goals 1:36 apart, including Alex Radulov’s first of the season to give the home side the win. 2015 Art Ross winner Jamie Benn recorded two assists, while newcomer and former Maple Leaf Connor Carrick also picked up two assists in the win, and was named the game’s second star. Defenceman John Klingberg played a game high 27:14 against the Coyotes and picked up an assist, last season he finished sixth in Norris Trophy voting for the league’s top defenceman award. This lineup will likely be the same for Saturday night’s game against the Jets, it will be their second game of four straight on home ice to straight the season. Of note, Tyler Seguin was held pointless in the victory. He has 16 goals against the Jets in the last five seasons.
