Outside of their historic rivalry, this is a massive game for both teams as a win should guarantee either nation a spot in the final. The loser would likely have to win their final round robin game, against Finland for Canada and Sweden for USA.

Canada opened the tournament with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against the Swedes, while the United States pulled away late in a 6-1 rout of the Finns.

This game is essentially a pick’em on the 4 Nations Face-Off odds, with the total pegged at 6.0.

This will be the 20th meeting between the nations in a true best-on-best tournament (Canada Cup, World Cup, Olympics) with NHL participation. Canada leads the series 14-4-1.

Of course, one of the most famous recent meetings, if you can call 15 years ago recent, was in the gold medal game of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, which culminated in Sidney Crosby‘s famous Golden Goal.

The updated 4 Nations futures board has the United States as the new tournament favourite at +105, with Canada at +140. The tournament opened with Canada at +145 and the U.S. at +150.

After his performance against Sweden, it’s no surprise to see Sidney Crosby as the favourite to win tournament MVP at +400, while Americans Matthew Tkachuk (+800) and Connor Hellebuyck (+900) round out the top three.

Team USA

It was a bit of a sleepy game for the Americans through two periods against Finland on Thursday. USA finally pulled away in the third, however, scoring twice in the first minute of the period while cruising to a 6-1 victory. The Tkachuk brothers came up big, with Matthew and Brady each scoring twice. Head coach Mike Sullivan put the Tkachuk’s on a line with Jack Eichel with the score tied 1-1 in the second period and the chemistry produced six points in the third.

After allowing a weak opening goal, Connor Hellebuyck locked in the rest of the way against Finland, making 20 total saves in the game. Hellebuyck entered the tournament as the hottest goalie in the NHL, riding a personal six-game win streak while allowing two or less goals in four of those games. He’ll be a tough test for the Canadians as he currently leads the NHL in wins (34), goals-against average (2.06), save percentage (.925) and shutouts (six).

Team Canada

Remember that much lauded Canadian PP1 unit of Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Sam Reinhart and Cale Makar? Well, it took 11 seconds to score on its only power play of the game, with MacKinnon burying a no-look pass from Crosby in the game’s opening minute. It was the first of three assists on the night for Crosby, who also set up Mitch Marner’s OT winner. Canada has now won a ridiculous 26 straight games with Crosby in the lineup as they prepare for a massive test against the Americans.

Jordan Binnington stopped 23 of 26 shots against Sweden and although he wasn’t spectacular, he did come up with some key saves, particularly in overtime. The big loss from the game is Vegas defenceman Shea Theodore, who will miss the rest of the tournament with an upper-body injury. Canada isn’t allowed to add another defenceman to the roster, so Travis Sanheim will draw into the lineup after being a healthy scratch in the first game. There’s also been talk about dressing Sam Bennett to combat the Americans’ heavy-hitting approach led by the Tkachuks.
