Game 4 Recap: Oilers Beat Stars 4–1, Push Series to the Brink

The Oilers are one win away from punching their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final, again.

Edmonton took control of the Western Conference Final with a 4–1 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 4 at Rogers Place Tuesday night, thanks to strong special teams, timely saves, and some clutch veteran play. The win gives the Oilers a 3–1 series lead, with a chance to close it out Thursday in Dallas.

Leon Draisaitl and Corey Perry each scored on the power play and picked up an assist. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins continued his playoff heater with two helpers, while Connor McDavid quietly added two more of his own. Goaltender Stuart Skinner was sharp again, stopping 28 of 29 shots to secure his third straight win.

“We’ve managed the swings well,” Draisaitl said. “Their push was strong, but Stu has been incredible, and we’ve done a good job settling down when it matters.”

The Oilers opened the scoring late in the first period with Draisaitl ripping a one-timer off a Nugent-Hopkins feed for his seventh of the postseason. Dallas tied it up early in the second when Jason Robertson buried a power-play goal, but Edmonton answered fast. Nugent-Hopkins pulled off a slick move down low and fed Perry for an easy tap-in.

That 2–1 lead held up thanks to Edmonton’s third-period lockdown. The Oilers outshot the Stars 13–4 in the final frame and killed any hope of a comeback with empty-net goals from Kasperi Kapanen and Adam Henrique.

Zach Hyman left the game in the first period after taking a shoulder from Mason Marchment and did not return. His status for Game 5 is still unclear.

Despite a strong start and 30 saves from Jake Oettinger, the Stars couldn’t solve the Oilers’ structure late. They’ve now been outscored 13–2 over the last three games.

“A little bit of the same story,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “We’ve got to be better on the penalty kill and find a way to get that early lead.”

The Oilers’ power play is now 5-for-11 in the series and remains the difference-maker. Edmonton has also scored first in seven straight games and seems to have cracked the code on how to frustrate Dallas’ top skaters.

“They’re going to be desperate, we know that,” Draisaitl said post-game. “We have to match that intensity.”

Game 5 goes Thursday night in Dallas. The Oilers have a chance to return to the Final for the second year in a row. For now, they’ve got the Stars on the ropes.
