Dustin Wolf

Wolf is coming off a spectacular rookie season which saw him post a 29-16-8 record with a 2.64 goals-against average and .910 save percentage. The 24-year-old eventually finished second in voting for the Calder Trophy behind Montreal Canadiens defenceman Lane Hutson.

The deal carries an AAV of $7.5 million, although Wolf will carry a cap hit of $850,000 for this season as he finishes the last of a two-year deal.

Drafted in the seventh round in 2019, Wolf made his NHL debut in the 2022-23 season, playing one game. He split the 2023-24 season with the Flames and the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers before becoming a full-time NHLer last season.

Wolf is looked at as a future star in the league, so this could be a great deal for Calgary in the long run. He was named Goaltender of the Year back-to-back in the AHL in 2022 and 2023 and named AHL MVP in the 2023-24 season.

Flames’ future

The Flames now have eight players signed at least through the 2028-29 season, locking up their core for the long-term. Wolf joins forwards Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri, Matt Coronato, Martin Pospisil, Yegor Sharangovich as well as defencemen Mackenzie Weegar and Kevin Bahl.

When Wolf’s contract kicks in for the 2026-27 campaign, he’ll be the second-highest paid player on the roster behind Huberdeau’s $10.5 million cap hit.

Wolf will be looking to help Calgary snap a three-year playoff drought. The Flames barely missed the playoffs last year, matching St. Louis with 96 points, but they lost the tie-breaker.

The Flames’ regular season point total is set at a reasonable 83.5 and they are +230 to make the playoffs on the NHL futures board.
