The Detroit Red Wings roll into Toronto to face the Maple Leafs without their superstar captain; Auston Matthews.

Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs NHL Betting Odds

The Wings and Leafs met three times last season and Detroit claimed two wins both of which came in Toronto. All three matchups were decided by a single goal, ignoring the one empty netter that Detroit scored and they played the UNDER 2-1.

Through 12 games Detroit has split their results against the spread 6-6, including a 5-5 split over their past 10. They have been lights out defensively early on this season squeezing into the top 10 for goals against per game at an even three goals. Their offence needs to find another gear if they are going to snap their nine year playoff drought. They scored just two three games in a row before putting in four Wednesday night. They have the 11th worst goals per game at a 2.75 average.

The Leafs are posting similar numbers to their opponents but have been doing it slightly better. Their 2.79 goals against average is the sixth best in the league, but their offence has been lacklustre scoring 3.07 per game sitting right in the middle of the league.

Detroit Red Wings

After a three-game slide, the Wings played shut down defence picking up back-to-back W’s, 2-1 on Saturday and 4-1 on Wednesday in Chicago. Cam Talbot was between the pipes for each of those wins improving his record to 4-1-1 and claiming the starting role for at least the next few contests.

Alex Debrincat opened the scoring on Wednesday scoring his 6th of the campaign with just two ticks left on the clock in the first period. After the Hawks tied things in the second Dylan Larkin scored his team leading eighth of the season to pull his team back ahead. Joe Veleno’s first of the season and Andrew Copp’s empty netter sealed the 4-1 victory for Detroit.

Lucas Raymond had an assist in the game extending his point streak to three-games. The 22-year-old Swede is earning his big new paycheck this season leading the team with 12 points. He would like to have more than just one goal but at a point per game he is set for his best season so far.

The Wings return home after Friday’s game in Toronto and will face the New York Rangers on Saturday.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Fans were wondering what was happening with Leafs star Auston Mathews. After notching 69 goals last season, he opened the year with just five through 13 games. Well he missed the Leafs most recent game at home versus Boston on Tuesday night with what his coach described as a lingering injury. He was also not at practice on Thursday, leaving his status for this weekends back-to-back up in the air.

His squad did just fine in his absence Tuesday shutting down there rivaled Boston Bruins 4-0. The Buds scored three on the powerplay and added an empty netter for the 4-0 final pushing into second place in the Atlantic. Morgan Reilly had three points (1G, 2A), while Matthew Knies, Mitch Marner and William Nylander each had a pair.

The Leafs shook a two-game slide in that one, on the back of Anthony Stolarz, who stopped all 29 shots for his first shutout this season.

Toronto has a quick turn around as well, hosting another original six rival on Saturday when the Montreal Canadiens visit.
