Edmonton Oilers vs. Vegas Golden Knights Game 5 Recap (May 14, 2025)
Kasperi Kapanen played hero in overtime, and Stuart Skinner delivered another rock-solid shutout as Edmonton took down the Golden Knights 1-0 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to win the series.
The game-winner came at 7:19 of overtime. Darnell Nurse’s point shot hit traffic and dropped in the crease. Kapanen whiffed on the first chance, Leon Draisaitl jabbed at it, and then Kapanen stayed with it and finally jammed it in.
“I missed it a couple times,” Kapanen said. “Just trying to stay with it. Luckily, it went in. That pretty much summed up the whole game today. There weren’t too many grade-A chances, and I’m just happy with it.”
It was only Kapanen’s second game of the playoffs. He didn’t dress until Game 4 but made his presence felt when it mattered most.
The win sends Edmonton to the Western Conference Final for the second year in a row, where they’ll face either Dallas or Winnipeg. The Stars hold a 3-1 series lead heading into Game 5 on Thursday.
Skinner stopped all 24 shots he faced for his second straight shutout. Just a couple of games ago, he was sitting on the bench. Now, he’s the reason the Oilers are still playing.
“He came up big the last two nights,” said head coach Kris Knoblauch. “We needed them, especially as the game wore on in the third period. A lot more saves were needed. But not only making the saves but looking confident. If anyone needed to feel good about their game and have a little reward, he definitely deserved it.”
Edmonton outshot Vegas 31-24 and controlled most of the play, though neither team created much offensively. According to Natural Stat Trick, there were only five high-danger chances in regulation, and Vegas had four of them.
Still, the Oilers stuck with it. Brett Howden missed a wide-open net for Vegas early in the third. On the next shift, Draisaitl had a breakaway stopped by Adin Hill. McDavid nearly ended it late in regulation on a 2-on-1, but Hill kicked it out with 1:06 left.
Hill finished with 29 saves. Vegas played without captain Mark Stone, who missed Game 5 after trying to gut it out in Game 4. Cole Schwindt dressed in his place for his first career playoff game.
“We’re giving ourselves some opportunities,” said Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy. “We’re just not executing, making the play, whatever you want to call it. And making some mistakes — and they’re capitalizing.”
Connor McDavid, who was quiet offensively all night, summed it up like this: “I’m really excited, obviously. We’re excited. We keep putting ourselves in good positions, and we keep giving ourselves a chance. We keep knocking at the door. That’s all you can do: Give yourself a chance.”
Kapanen’s goal was the second playoff overtime winner of his career. For the Oilers, it was their first 1-0 overtime playoff win since 1997. They’ve now reached the conference final in back-to-back years for the first time since 1992.
