NHL Trade Deadline Updates: 2016 Deals and Rumors

The 2016 NHL trade deadline should be an exciting one to keep an eye on, since there are a number of clubs who will be looking to add some depth for potential playoff runs. As the trade deadline draws near – February 29th at 3PM ET – we expect to see players being moved from teams like the Leafs, Oilers, Flames, the Wild, Sabres, Canucks and the Blue Jackets. Of course, several other teams could come out as sellers to try to take advantage of a particularly buyer-rich market, if those teams are looking to bolster their roster for a run at the Stanley Cup Finals.

2016 NHL Official Trades

This season has already seen some big name players moved, including Ryan Johansen from the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Nashville Predators for defenseman Seth Jones in January, and the trade of Dion Phaneuf from the Leafs to the Senators. Here are a few of the players that are being closely watched for this year’s trade deadline.

Trade Rumours

Mikkel Boedker

Phoenix Coyotes’ right winger and pending UFA Mikkel Boedker is potentially on the trade block for the Coyotes, and could fetch a great return, as he’s a big player who averages about 50-60 points a season.

Scott Hartnell

John Tortorella doesn’t seem to like Scott Hartnell. The Columbus Blue Jacket veteran forward has been a healthy scratch more than once while playing for Torts, and this can sometimes indicate that a player is on the trading block. Plenty of teams would be happy to take him, so the Blue Jackets could get an excellent return on a player of his caliber.

Jiri Hudler

Another Flames player that would be a likely trade contender. Hudler could get them a decent draft pick or a prospect for teams looking for affordable forward depth. Any team looking for a top six forward wold benefit from Hudler’s experience.

Kris Russell

The Flames will be looking to unload a number of players before the deadline, and Kris Russell could give them some cap space. Their D is already fairly stacked with Giordano, Hamiltion, and TJ Brodie, and they’ll need to be able to pay Monahan and Gaudreau next year.

Cam Ward

Eddie Lack has been getting most of the starts in Carolina, so we would not be surprised to see veteran netminder Cam Ward moved by the deadline. He hasn’t been to the playoffs since the 2008-9 season, so he’ll probably go fairly cheap, getting the Hurricanes a mid or late pick.

Loui Eriksson

Eriksson, in his final year of a contract with the Boston Bruins with an affordable $4.25 million cap-hit, has had a great year, which makes him even more tantalizing on the trade market. Boston will be looking to trade for decent prospects or high draft picks in order to bolster their push for a more youthful roster.

Jonathan Drouin

After being relegated to the AHL in January, Drouin refused to report to the team, requested a trade, and they suspended him. Because the Lightning are playoff contenders, they’ll be looking for a decent return on Drouin, who is a young, scoring forward with plenty of potential. That said, the Lighting are in no rush, and they hold all the cards.

Travis Hamonic

New York Islander’s defenseman Travis Hamonic has asked for at trade to a team in Western Canada for personal family-related reasons, and there are definately a couple teams that fit that criteria that are in the market for some defensive depth.

Dan Hamhuis

Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis is coming to the end of a 6-year contract with a Vancouver team that has been struggling this season. Hamhuis would have to waive his no-trade clause to be moved. There are a number of potential destinations for Hamhuis, and Van City Buzz wrote this post about the possibilities for him.

Radim Vrbata

Alongside Canucks teammate Dan Hamhuis, there are rumors floating that the club might be looking to trade veteran Radim Vrbata, who recently stated “I signed for two seasons and have no desire to leave, even though this season is not going as well. You sign up for something, you have to deal with the good and the bad. If a trade happens, it happens, and you go from there.”

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

The Oilers are a team looking to stack their defense, and Nugent-Hopkins’ $6 million salary cap charge could be the space Chiarelli uses to acquire a top D-man.

James Reimer

If the Leafs were looking to move a goalie based only on their stats, they’d more likely want to trade Bernier. The issue is that Bernier has another year on his contract and Reimer is a UFA. The Leafs could potentially net a decent player for Reimer, so we’re keeping our eye on the trade-happy Leafs to see if they decide to shrink their goalie stable.
