Sidney Crosby
Crosby has accomplished just about everything you can hope to accomplish as a hockey player. After being selected first overall by the Penguins in the 2005 NHL draft, Crosby has gone on to win three Stanley Cups, three Ted Lindsay Awards, two Hart Trophy’s, two Art Ross Trophy’s, two Rocket Richard Trophy’s, two Mark Messier Leadership Awards, a Conn Smythe Trophy and he’s a nine-time NHL All-Star.
Crosby’s international resume is just as impressive. He has two Olympic gold medals, a World Junior gold, a World Championship gold and a World Cup of Hockey gold. That makes him one of just 30 members of the Triple Gold Club, a group that consists of players and coaches who have won a Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold medal and a World Championship gold medal. Crosby’s international legacy is highlighted by scoring the overtime goal in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic men’s gold medal game, known nationally as “the Golden Goal.”
Mr. Crosby’s Math Class
The 35-year-old Crosby currently leads the Penguins in goals (21), assists (27) and points (48). His shooting percentage this year is 18.8 per cent, the second-highest of his career, and he is averaging 1.2 points per game, which is actually lower than his career average of 1.27.
Bear with us while we do some math. Crosby is on pace for a 98-point season which would bring him to 1,507 for his career. However, keep in mind those numbers are assuming his pace doesn’t drop off and it would require him to play all 82 games, something he hasn’t done since 2017-18.
Crosby’s last five seasons:
2017-18: 89 points (29G, 60A) in 82 games.
2018-19: 100 points (35G, 65A) in 79 games.
2019-20: 47 points (16G, 31A) in 41 games. *COVID shortened, Pittsburgh played 69 regular-season games
2020-21: 62 points (24G, 38A) in 55 games. *COVID shortened, Pittsburgh played 56 regular-season games
2021-22: 84 points (31G, 53A) in 69 games.
When Will Sid the Kid Hit 1,500?
The Penguins currently occupy the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. They’re five points back of third place in the Metropolitan Division and would need to leapfrog Washington, who currently hold the first wild-card spot. Pittsburgh remaining in the playoff hunt is key to Crosby playing as many important games as possible and being in a position to put up more points. If the Pens are in the hunt, bank on Crosby hitting 1,500 points before the end of the season.
