NHL Odds: David Pastrnak will miss start of Bruins training camp

Boston Bruins sniper David Pastrnak will miss the first few practices of training camp because of tendinitis, general manager Don Sweeney announced Wednesday.

Here’s what we know.

David Pastrnak

Sweeney did not say where the tendinitis was located, but he did say it came up during Pastrnak’s last training period.

“He’s still on the ice but he’ll be in full practice next week,” Sweeney said. “So, that’s the only surprise we have. Everybody else is fully up and running.”

Pastrnak has played all 82 games for Boston in each of the last three seasons. Last year he led the team by a wide margin in goals (43), assists (63) and points (106). For comparison, the next highest scorer was Morgan Geekie with 57 points (33G, 24A).

Boston Bruins

Boston is hoping to get off to a better start than last season, in which they quickly fell out of the playoff race and missed the postseason for the first time since 2016.

However, it’s a different looking team heading into this year’s training camp. Captain Brad Marchand was shipped to Florida at last year’s trade deadline and former Bruin Marco Sturm replaces interim coach Joe Sacco, who took over when Jim Montgomery was fired last November.

Tanner Jeannot (free agency) and Viktor Arvidsson (trade) are the biggest additions to the roster. The team will also be hoping for a bounce back year from goaltender Jeremy Swayman, who missed all of last year’s training camp and pre-season as he negotiated a new contract.

For the first time in a long time, the Bruins enter the season with the longest odds to win the Atlantic Division at +10,000. Oddsmakers clearly have no faith in Boston as they also have the fifth-shortest odds to finish with the worst record in the NHL at +1500.

The Bruins’ regular season point total is listed at 80.5 (they had 76 in 2024-25) and they are +375 long shots to make the playoffs.
