Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers head back to the Pacific Division after finishing second in last year’s all-Canadian North Division.

Looking Back

The Oilers finished behind only the Maple Leafs last season, despite both squads each winning 35 games. McDavid reached the 100-point plateau for the fourth time in his career, finishing with 105 points (33G, 72A) in just 56 games. He finished 20 points ahead of the next closest player, his teammate Leon Draisaitl. Everything was wonderful in Edmonton…until the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Oilers were manhandled by the Winnipeg Jets in a sweep.

Edmonton Oilers Trades / Acquisitions

Many pointed fingers at the Oilers’ spotty defensive core after what happened in last year’s playoffs, so GM Ken Holland completely rebuilt his blue line. Adam Larsson was taken by the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft, while Holland traded Ethan Bear to Carolina and Caleb Jones to Chicago. The Jones trade brought in future Hall-of-Famer Duncan Keith, after 16 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. Keith is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, who has played almost 1,200 career NHL games and scored over 600 points.

Another new face Oilers fans are excited to see is winger Zach Hyman, who signed as a free agent for the next seven years. After six seasons playing on Toronto’s top line, the Oilers are hoping Hyman is a perfect fit with McDavid.

Edmonton Oilers 2021-22 NHL Odds

The Oilers have some interesting betting lines heading into this season as they look to be one of the better teams in a weak Pacific Division. They are second-favourites to win the Pacific, at +290 on the NHL futures board, behind only Vegas at -175. Edmonton is +900 to win the Western Conference, but keep in mind, that line includes the playoffs, so the Oilers would have to go to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first tine since 2006.

McDavid, the reigning Hart Trophy winner, is a +190 favourite to win it again on Sports Interaction’s NHL props. His teammate, Leon Draisaitl, has the sixth-best odds (+1500) to win his second career Hart Trophy.

McDavid (+735) and Draisaitl (+737) are the second and third-favourites respectively, for the Maurice Rocket Richard Trophy.  They only trail Toronto’s Auston Matthews (+326). The Oilers’ star duo could get head start on Matthews though, as the reigning Rocket Richard winner is expected to miss some time with a wrist injury.

Edmonton Oilers 2021-22 Season Prediction

Edmonton’s revamped blue line looks much more dynamic than last year, and that should be enough for them to finish at the top of the Pacific Division standings. If the Oilers can push out Vegas for first place in the division, McDavid will win the Hart trophy. Draisaitl is a good value pick for the Rocket, as well.
