Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes Game 4 Recap (May 12, 2025)

The Carolina Hurricanes just keep rolling at home. They improved to 5-0 at Lenovo Center this postseason with a 5-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Monday night, taking a 3-1 lead in the series and putting themselves in position to close it out in Game 5 on Thursday.

Taylor Hall and Sean Walker each had a goal and an assist. Frederik Andersen made 19 saves. And five different Canes found the back of the net. Whenever the Caps tried to make it interesting, Carolina punched right back. That was the story of the night.

“We kind of kept our composure,” Walker said after scoring a huge goal late in the third. “Didn’t really panic, just stuck to our systems.”

Carolina went up 2-0 on goals from Shayne Gostisbehere and Seth Jarvis. Washington finally broke through in the third when Jakob Chychrun scored on a pretty feed from Matt Roy to cut it to 2-1. Less than three minutes later, Hall answered on a breakaway after a perfect stretch pass from Jack Roslovic.

Ovechkin made it 3-2 with a one-timer on a 5-on-3 power play. That was his first point of the series and the 77th playoff goal of his career, moving him past Mario Lemieux for 12th all-time. But once again, Carolina responded. Hall poked the puck free along the boards, sent a backhand pass up to Walker, and he did the rest. His wrist shot from the left side beat Logan Thompson clean to make it 4-2.

Andrei Svechnikov added the empty-netter to seal it.

“We’re giving ourselves opportunities. We’re just not executing,” said Capitals coach Spencer Carbery. “And we’re making mistakes. They’re capitalizing.”

The Caps started well. Connor McMichael had a great look in the opening minute and Aliaksei Protas rang one off the post shortly after. But Carolina’s penalty kill was lights out again. Washington had a four-minute power play that carried over two periods and managed just one shot.

“The kill was huge,” said head coach Rod Brind’Amour. “To be able to come out with the lead was a big key.”

Thompson made 32 saves for Washington but didn’t get a ton of support. The Hurricanes, on the other hand, have now had 10 different goal scorers in this series. That kind of depth is hard to beat.

Game 5 goes Thursday night in D.C. Carolina took out the Devils in five games last year and now has a chance to do the same to the top seed in the East.

“I like where we’re at, that’s for sure,” Brind’Amour said.
