The Leafs came out flat against Columbus on Tuesday, trailing 5-0 by the midway point of the game before eventually losing 6-2. Meanwhile, giving up three goals in the second period cost St. Louis in a 3-2 loss to Winnipeg.

Toronto opened as -225 favourites to win on the NHL odds, with the total set at 6.5.

Blues vs. Maple Leafs NHL Betting Odds

The Maple Leafs swept the season series last year, winning 4-1 at home in February and 4-2 a week later in St. Louis. Bobby McMann had four goals across the two games, including his first career hat trick.

Both these teams have paid bettors early in the season, with the Blues going 5-2 against the spread while the Leafs are 4-3 ATS. This may seem like a ‘get-right’ game for Toronto, but it’s worth noting St. Louis has won six of their last seven road games against the Leafs.

Toronto and St. Louis have both played the Under in four of seven games this season. They also played the Under both times they met last year, but keep in mind the Over has hit in four of the Blues’ last five games against Eastern Conference teams, while the Leafs have hit the Over in six of their last seven games against Western Conference opponents.

St. Louis Blues

It was bad luck for the Blues on Tuesday as they ran into the NHL’s last remaining perfect team in the Winnipeg Jets. St. Louis was outscored 3-0 in the second period and a late comeback bid ultimately fell short. Brandon Saad scored both goals for the Blues, with Robert Thomas assisting on each snipe. Jordan Binnington stopped 21 of 24 shots faced in net.

Philip Broberg was held off the scoresheet on Tuesday for the first time this season. It looks like the gamble to offer-sheet Broberg in the off-season has paid off as the 23-year-old defenceman has six points (1G, 5A) in seven games while averaging almost 20 minutes of ice time per night.

There’s been no word on a starting goalie for Thursday. Binnington, who has a 1-3-0 record with a 3.04 goals-against average and .891 save percentage, has been outplayed by Joel Hofer, who is 3-0-0 with a 2.32 GAA and .932 SV. Each goalie started a game versus Toronto last year, with Binnington making 28 saves on 31 shots and Hofer making 25 saves on 28 shots.

Toronto Maple Leafs

It was easily Toronto’s worst game of the season against Columbus on Tuesday. The Leafs came out flat with just six shots in the first period, with Dennis Hildeby torched for five goals by the halfway point of the game. Hildeby finished with 32 saves on 38 shots. Matthew Knies and Nicholas Robertson scored for Toronto.

Auston Matthews saw a three-game goal streak come to an end on Tuesday, while Toronto’s two leading scorers, William Nylander (5G, 2A) and Mitch Marner (1G, 6A), were each held without a point. Matthews has continued to put the puck in the net this year despite worry that his goal total could dip as he’s now playing significant minutes on the penalty kill.

There was some belief Joseph Woll could get his first start of the season in Columbus, but he was ultimately held out because of a lower-body injury that has prevented him from playing so far this season. It seems more likely Woll will play Thursday and the Leafs will go with the hot hand of Anthony Stolarz on Saturday in Boston.
