Super Bowl travel
Travel certainly takes its toll. The team that has the least amount of travel for the Super Bowl is 34-25 straight up all-time, including 7-3 SU in the last 10 years. That could be a huge factor this year with the Super Bowl held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, a stadium the Seahawks visit every season as a member of the NFC West division.
Age is just a number
At just 23-years-old, sophomore Drake Maye is looking to become the youngest starting quarterback ever to win the Super Bowl. Previous quarterbacks to reach the Super Bowl in their second year are 3-4 SU all-time.
Championship games dictate ATS success
Teams that fail to cover in Conference Championship games are 4-10 SU and 2-11-1 against the spread in the Super Bowl since the merger. New England failed to cover as a 3.5-point favourite over Denver in the AFC Championship, while Seattle covered as a 2.5-point favourite over the Rams in the NFC Championship.
Conservative total
The total for this year’s Super Bowl is sitting at 45.5 as of Thursday afternoon. That’s the lowest posted total since the 2015 season when Denver beat Carolina 24-10 with a posted total of 43.5. That’s also the only other year Levi’s Stadium hosted the Super Bowl.
Darling Darnold
Believe it not, Sam Darnold is the winningest quarterback in the NFL over the last two seasons, going 30-7 SU and 25-11-1 ATS. Pretty good for a guy the Jets, Panthers, 49ers and Vikings essentially gave up on.
Against all odds
New England is just the fourth team in the last 50 years to reach the Super Bowl with preseason odds at 80-1 or longer. The other teams on the list are the 2021 Cincinnati Bengals (150-1, lost), the 2016 Falcons (80-1, lost) and the 1999 Rams (150-1, won).
Receivers win
Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the fourth player in NFL history to lead the league in receiving yards and reach the Super Bowl. He joins a list that includes Drew Pearson (1977), Jerry Rice (1989, 1994) and Cooper Kupp (2021), who all went on to win the Super Bowl.
Primetime Seahawks
The Seahawks’ primetime fortunes have completely flipped with Darnold at the helm. After head coach Mike Macdonald took over, Seattle went 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS in night games with Geno Smith at quarterback compared to 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS with Darnold slinging the ball.
Dogs have barked
The Super Bowl is proof anything can happen in a winner-take-all game as underdogs have won the last three Super Bowls. Dogs have also covered in five straight Super Bowls and they are 15-7 ATS over the last 22 years. Woof, woof.
Jerseys matter
In traditional Western movies, the cowboy in the white hat is the good guy and the cowboy in the black hat is the bad guy. You can apply that to recent Super Bowls too as teams wearing white jerseys are 16-5 SU in the last 21 years.
