The Lakers continue to play mediocre as they sit just inside the playoff picture entering play Sunday, while the Timberwolves remain just outside of the playoffs.  L.A. has won two of their last three games, including a 139-106 New Year’s Eve win over Portland on Friday.  Minnesota has dropped two of their last three games, including a 120-108 New Year’s Eve loss in Utah on Friday.

The Lakers are 8-point favourites to win on the NBA odds, with a total of 223.5.

Timberwolves vs. Lakers NBA Betting Odds

Minnesota has already got the best of L.A. twice this year.  The Timberwolves won a 107-83 decision in Los Angeles on Nov. 12 and also downed the Lakers 110-92 in Minnesota on Dec. 17.  Those wins haven’t seemed to influence Sports Interaction bettors, however, as about 70 per cent of the betting public is taking L.A., while 80 per cent of action is taking the Over.  Keep in mind, four of the last five games between these teams have gone Under.

The T-Wolves have stumbled over the last couple of weeks, dropping four of their last five games.  They’re 18-17 against the spread for the season, including 7-2 ATS in their last nine games.  The total has gone Over in nine of Minnesota’s last 12 games.

The Lakers have been mediocre at home, winning 11 of 21 games at Crypto.com Arena (that name will be tough to get used to).  They’re an abysmal 15-22 ATS overall this year, including 7-14 ATS at home.  The total has gone Over in four of Los Angeles’ last five games.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Anthony Edwards scored a team-high 26 points against Utah in his return from a six-game COVID absence, but it wasn’t enough as Minnesota dropped their second consecutive game.  Malik Beasley added 22 points and Jordan McLaughlin had a season-high three steals.  Leading scorer Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell both missed the game in COVID protocols and are questionable to play on Sunday.  Towns is averaging team-highs in points per game (24.5), rebounds (9.1) and blocks (1.1).  Edwards is the Timberwolves’ second-leading scorer with 22.2 ppg and a team-high 1.5 steals.  Russell is averaging 18.7 ppg and a team-high 6.7 assists.

Los Angeles Lakers

It took a season-high 43 points from LeBron James and a triple-double from Russell Westbrook, but the Lakers pulled out the win against the Trail Blazers on Friday.  James added 14 rebounds, becoming the oldest player in NBA history to have a game with at least 40 points and 14 rebounds, one day after his 37th birthday.  Over his last seven games, James is averaging 36 points and shooting 57.8 per cent from the field.  He’s second in league scoring with 28.6 ppg and he leads L.A. with 1.7 steals per game.

Westbrook finished the Portland game with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists.  The triple-double king is averaging 19.5 ppg and a team-high 8.4 assists.  Anthony Davis remains out of the lineup with an MCL sprain.  Before the injury, Davis was averaging 23.3 ppg (second to James) and leading the team in rebounds (9.9) and blocks (2.0).
