NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Toronto Raptors

The Toronto Raptors have little time to enjoy Friday’s win as they immediately head to Minnesota to face the Timberwolves on Saturday evening.

There is no rest for the weary in the young NBA season. The Toronto Raptors bounced back on Friday night at home with a 115-107 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers but had to pick and leave for Minnesota right after. The Timberwolves have an adventurous start to their campaign with a deflating loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on opening night, followed by a narrow 117-115 success at the Sacramento Kings on Thursday.

Our NBA odds have a lot of faith in Minnesota, who are pegged as considerable -14.5 favourites for this match.

Raptors vs. Timberwolves NBA Betting Odds

Some might be surprised to learn that Toronto’s recent history against Minnesota on the hardwood floor is quite strong. The Dinos are 7-3 the last 10 times they’ve tussled with the Wolves. However, many of those were home wins. Minnesota has defended its home court the previous two times Toronto paid a visit.

Darko Rajakovic’s ensemble has a 1-1 record versus the spread so far. They were underdogs twice at home this week, largely because the visiting sides were playoff teams last season and Toronto is like the Walking Dead these days. Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, Kelly Olynyk, and Bruce Brown are all banged up.

The Timberwolves are are 1-1 ATS through two contests. They flopped on opening night away to the Lakers, then narrowly took care of business by defeating the Kings as -2 favourites. Saturday night marks their 2024-2 home opener. Furthermore, the team is very healthy, with all the big players ready to roll.

Toronto Raptors

Toronto needed to rebound after Wednesday’s loss, no pun intended. The Cavaliers match reminded fans that the Raptors might still have a long road toward being truly competitive again, even though a lot of lesser-known players got the start.

They were much better prepared on Friday when the equally ailing 76ers and former friend Kyle Lowry paid a visit. Whereas on Wednesday the club looked timid at times, on Friday Scottie Barnes and company were far more aggressive at the rim, outrebounding Philly 54-28, including 18 offensive boards, which kept tons of possessions alive. Toronto isn’t known as a three-point shooting team and this match did nothing to dispel that (6-for-23).

However, on the defensive side, Toronto was often incredible. Both Chris Boucher and Jakob Poeltl had four blocks. Rookie Jonathan Mogbo had a trio of them too, to go with nine boards. With so many teammates injured, Barnes was the offensive spark the club needed scoring 27 points.

This is an undermanned Raptors unit right now, but if they can put in a similar effort in Minnesota, covering the spread is feasible. Without the 27 turnovers, ideally.

Minnesota Timberwolves

After two tough road games – one loss and a narrow victory – the Timberwolves are getting ready for their home opener. The stage could not be set any better for a win, hence their status as -14.5 favourites.

For one, Minnesota is completely healthy. Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Mike Conley, Jaden McDaniels, and newcomers Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo are all available. What’s more, the latter two have had a couple of regular season games to acclimate themselves to their new surroundings and teammates.

In fact, Randle was excellent Thursday in Sacramento in a game where the Wolves needed every single one of his 33 points (13-for-17). Edwards (32 points, 10-for-24) came to the rescue at the end of regulation, hitting a pair of free throws with just a few seconds remaining to break the 115-115 deadlock.
