San Antonio Spurs vs. Charlotte Hornets: Victor Wembanyama makes NBA Summer League debut
It’s been a week for No. 1 overall draft selection Victor Wembanyama – on and off the court. First, he got mixed up in a weird altercation with Britney Spears, of all people, which caused a stir in the tabloid world.
Now tonight he’s set to make his NBA Summer League debut against the Charlotte Hornets and their No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller. This is not going to be your usual, run-of-the-mill July scrimmage, though. The NBA announced that the 19,552-seat Thomas and Mack Center is sold out, while the one resale ticket that apparently was still available as of Thursday was being shopped for nearly $700 USD.
Welcome to the NBA spotlight, Wemby. Get used to it.
NBA prediction: San Antonio Spurs
Toronto Blue Jays at Detroit Tigers: Jays’ Manoah favoured in MLB return
Toronto Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah is back from a highly publicized trip to the minors and oddsmakers have the Jays as -140 road favourites in Detroit. Before being sent down on June 6, Manoah shouldered a nasty 1-7 record to go along with a dismal 6.36 ERA. The latest scouting report claims his slider is biting again and his mechanics have improved, but we’ll have to wait and see how that translates against MLB hitters.
Alex Faedo (1-3, 5.54 ERA), who just completed a stretch in the minor as well, will start for Detroit. He hasn’t seen MLB action since hitting the DL on May 31 with a finger issue.
The Jays swept a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday and should be fired up to have Manoah back in the mix.
MLB prediction: Toronto Blue Jays to win vs. Detroit Tigers (-140)
Calgary Stampeders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers: Stampeders coming off bye week
The last time the Blue Bombers were in front of their home fans, they were embarrassed 30-6 by the BC Lions in their only loss of the year. And while they rebounded with a win in Montreal last week, the sting of that loss at IG Field likely still lingers. Before that, Winnipeg hadn’t lost to a West opponent at home since way back in 2018.
However, these teams always seem to take it down to the wire. Last year the Bombers won all three of their meetings with Calgary but each was decided by a single score late in the fourth quarter. With the Stamps getting healthier and coming off a bye week, we don’t expect any different this time around.
CFL prediction: Calgary to cover the point spread as 8-point underdogs
