The sky was falling when LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers stumbled out of the gate to an 0-3 start, but a pair of wins that lit up the scoreboard has calmed their critics – for now. On Saturday, they’ll get another opportunity to see where they measure up against a San Antonio Spurs team that is struggling to find its identity, too.

NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis

On paper this one looks like a track meet. Neither of these teams have had any problems putting points on the board. L.A. ranks second overall in averaging 125.4 points per game, while San Antonio puts up almost 115 a night with the second best shooting percentage from outside (44.1 percent).

Plus, the Lakers and Spurs are two of the worst defensive teams in the Association. Los Angeles ranks 29th in scoring defence giving up 124.4 per game while San Antonio sits 27th allowing 121.8. It’s no surprise then that in the eight games these two teams have played to date, over/under bettors who bet over the total are a combined 8-0.

Los Angeles Lakers

James posted his first triple-double in purple and gold by posting 28 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in Thursday’s home underdog win against the previously unbeaten Denver Nuggets. King James hasn’t missed a beat in his first four games as a Laker, posting 25.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 9.2 assists, and 2.0 assists per game. The Lakers were pegged as 1.5-point underdogs against Denver, but showed some real moxie with a 19-4 run late in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Kyle Kuzma scored 22 points, while JaVale McGee added 21. The Lakers will have Rajon Rondo back in the lineup against the Spurs after serving his suspension, but Brandon Ingram has one game remaining on his ban.

San Antonio Spurs

Just like the Lakers, the San Antonio Spurs are going through a getting-to-know-you phase. Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green are now playing north of the border, leaving coach Gregg Popovich with newcomers like DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poeltl. Down the road, those two players could be go-to guys in this lineup, but for now, they’re going through the growing pains of learning Popovich’s system. “You gain so many small instincts being in one system so long,” DeRozan told reporters. “Wording, comfort with the guys. This group is relatively new, so there’s a lot of new things every night. The best way to learn is through mistakes.” There have been a lot of those already and likely a lot more to come. This game with L.A. might look like a pick-up game at times.
