The Lakers are cruising, winning 10 of their last 12 games. A hiccup in January has been forgotten as they’re playing championship-caliber basketball these days.
The Philadelphia 76ers are about as shorthanded as it gets right now. Already without one All-Star in Ben Simmons, they’re likely to be without another on Tuesday as Joel Embiid should be out. Beyond that, guard Josh Richardson has also been ruled out. Add in the fact that the 76ers are a really bad road team and one has to think that they’re heading for a blowout on Tuesday. While a win might be out of reach, let’s take a closer look and see if they can push for a cover on Tuesday when they visit the West-leading Los Angeles Lakers.
NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis
While the 76ers are an incredible 28-2 at home this season, they’re a lousy 9-22 in away games. As a matter of fact, if the playoffs started today, they would be the only team – in either conference – that has yet to hit double-digit road wins. They’re just 2-9 straight up and against the spread in road games where the total is 220 or higher. Oddly enough, though, the 76ers have won and covered two straight at the Staples Center and four of the last five meetings overall.
As for the Lakers, they’re 46-13 on the season and are 32-26 ATS. They’re just 26-25 ATS as a favorite and 15-12 at home. They are a healthy 14-4 straight up and 11-6-1 ATS when at home with a total of 220 or higher.
Philadelphia 76ers
While many people thought a 76ers-Lakers matchup could be an NBA Finals preview, the 76ers are just the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference right now. Tuesday’s game won’t be a preview of any kind as they’re expected to be without Simmons, Embiid and Richardson. Those are three of the team’s top four scorers and combined score 53.9 points per game. That’s a lot to replace.
The good news is Tobias Harris has stepped up of late. He scored 25 in the loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday and had 34 on Thursday in the win against the New York Knicks. Shake Milton gotten a chance to shine and he’s taken full advantage. He’s fresh off a 39-point outing and has scored 17 or more in four of his last five games. These two will have to perform in a starring role on Tuesday if the 76ers are to get the win.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers are on cruise control right now as they’ve won 10 of their last 12 games. That little hiccup of stretch in mid-January has been long forgotten as they’re playing championship-caliber basketball these days. LeBron James is back in the MVP discussion as he’s averaging 27.0 points, 10.4 assists and 8.4 rebounds over his last nine games. Anthony Davis got the night off on Sunday but he’s averaging 26.2 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.9 blocks and 1.4 steals in his last nine. Those are also MVP-caliber numbers.
Davis ate the 76ers alive in their first meeting, scoring 31 points while adding in seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block while shooting 59.1% from the field. The Lakers actually lost that game, though, by 17 points. The Lakers got 60 points from James and Davis but the rest of the cast scored just 31. They’ll have to play better for the Lakers to win the rematch.
