Maurice Greene is going to have some huge advantages here as he’s not only about 60 pounds heavier than Villante with a four-inch reach advantage.
We have an interesting bout on the upcoming UFC card when Gian Villante and Maurice Greene go at it. Villante is moving up in weight but he’ll be the much smaller fighter in this heavyweight bout. Going by their profile pages on the UFC’s official website, Greene should have about a 60-pound edge. The MMA odds board has Green as a -235 favourite with Villante at +170.
There’s no question that heading into this bout, Villante needs a win. The UFC veteran has never really been that effective in the organization. He started his career 10-3 but is just 7-8 since. That’s his same record in the UFC as he enters Saturday’s bout having lost four of six. His last bout was a first-round knockout loss to Michael Oleksijczuk in February of last year, so he’s been off for more than a year. One has to think that if he doesn’t get the job done here, it might be the end of the line for him.
The hope here is that a jump to heavyweight will do him some good. He’s always been a fighter that’s done better standing as 10 of his 17 wins are via knockout (just two by submission) but now that begs the question as to how he’ll survive standing with bigger fighters? He hasn’t knocked anyone out since 2016. He’s had more than a year to work on this, so hopefully he has some new tricks in the bag. The old ones never really worked for him.
Maurice Greene vs. Gian Villante Odds
Greene is going to have some huge advantages here as he’s not only about 60 pounds heavier than Villante but he’s also got a four-inch reach advantage. Villante is not a guy who takes things to the ground or is a real threat to get inside and knockout Greene, so Greene should feel confident in his bout. The challenge is that he also has struggled in the UFC as he’s lost three of his four bouts and is coming off back-to-back losses. He was submitted by Aleksei Oleinik in the second round at UFC 246 in January and suffered a first-round knockout to Sergei Pavlovich at UFC Fight Night: Maia vs Askren in October of 2019.
For his career, Villante has absorbed 6.43 significant strikes per minute. If that continues in this fight, it’s going to be a quick night for him as Villante won’t be able to absorb that type of punishment from a man who is 60 pounds heavier.
Greene probably isn’t worth laying all of the juice as he isn’t exactly proven but he’s worth a bet here to win via knockout.
