Katlyn Chookagian

Saturday's co-main event will be the third fight this year for 31-year-old Chookagian, the No. 1 contender in the flyweight division.

Former women’s strawweight champion Jessica Andrade makes her flyweight debut against Katlyn Chookagian during this Saturday’s UFC Fight Island 6.

The Brazilian Andrade comes in as a -155 favourite on the MMA odds with the American Chookagian at +120.

This fight will serve as a flyweight measuring stick for Andrade.  Chookagian is a former title contender and currently a Top 10 pound-for-pound fighter, so a win will show the rest of the flyweights Andrade shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Katlyn Chookagian UFC Fight Night Odds

This will be the third fight this year for 31-year-old Chookagian, the No. 1 contender in the flyweight division.  After suffering a TKO loss in a title fight to Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 247 in February, Chookagian rebounded with a unanimous decision win over Shevchenko’s sister, Antonina, in May.  Chookagian has a 14-3 MMA record, including a 7-3 record in the octagon.

Chookagian’s best chance to win this fight is to utilize her reach advantage.  She has an enormous six-inch reach advantage and 7-inch leg reach advantage and will likely try to keep Andrade from coming in close.  Chookagian is a technically sound striker, but doesn’t have the striking power of her opponent.  It is likely she will rely on her reach to score points and keep Andrade at bay.  Chookagian probably wants to see this go to a judge’s decision, as 11 of her 14 victories have come that way.

Jessica Andrade UFC Fight Night Odds

The 29-year-old former strawweight champion, Andrade, comes into this fight with a 20-8 MMA record, including 11-6 in the UFC.  This will be her flyweight debut after losing her first strawweight championship defense to Zhang Weili by first-round TKO in August 2019, before also picking up a split decision loss to Rose Namajunas at UFC 251 in July.

Andrade is a power striker who averages more strikes landed per minute than Chookagian (6.55 for Andrade, 4.19 for Chookagian) and can do serious damage if she gets in close.  Her stats are even better on the ground, as she has a better takedown average per 15 minutes (3.21 for Andrade, 0.31 for Chookagian), higher takedown accuracy (58 per cent for Andrade, 15 per cent for Chookagian) and has a better takedown defense (76 per cent for Andrade, 50 per cent for Chookagian).

UFC Fight Night Predictions: Chookagian vs. Andrade

These fighters will likely feel each other out in the first-round with Chookagian using her reach to keep Andrade from getting in close, but she won’t be able to stop Andrade all night.  If Andrade can get in close early enough in the fight, she has a great chance for a KO, but this fight is more likely to end in a unanimous decision win for Andrade.
