Toronto Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette Leaves Monday’s Game with Knee Injury

An injury to a key player against an important opponent at a critical juncture in the season. Exactly what the Toronto Blue Jays and their fans didn’t need right now. Shortstop Bo Bichette was rounding first base after hitting a potential double in the bottom of the third inning against Baltimore. Orioles right fielder Anthony Santander’s alert throw to second base prompted Bichette to halt his run, which is when serious discomfort was felt in his right knee.

What could this possibly mean for Toronto’s trade prospects and its World Series odds?

Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette Injures Knee, Status Unknown

From the moment Bichette stopped in his tracks, there was a problem. The superstar shortstop immediately grabbed his knee in pain and was hobbling when trying to walk. Staff and manager John Schneider came out to see what the fuss was about but quickly arrived at the decision to accompany Bichette off the diamond and into the night.

Players from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to Chris Bassitt reacted to the event after the game.

Said Guerrero Jr.:

“Obviously very sad, frustrating. You’re losing our best hitter right now. But when I saw him walking off the field the way he was walking, I knew he wasn’t that bad. Hopefully, he’ll be all right.”

Manager John Schneider didn’t have much information in his post-game presser.

“He (Bichette) said on the field coming off he kind of jammed it a little bit when he was trying to stop. With a guy like him you want to be extremely proactive, obviously. In terms of what’s going forward, we’ll know more Tuesday. We’re still figuring that out.”

Bichette is currently ranked fourth in the majors in batting average with a sensational .321 efficiency. The Blue Jays themselves are 59-48 and sit just inside a Wild Card spot, but the race is very tight.

The trade deadline is Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, leaving Toronto with precious little time to bolster the batting order should they feel they have to depending on what Bichette’s long-term status is. Names mentioned are Chicago White Sox’s Tim Anderson and, believe it or not, the Seattle Mariners’ Teoscar Hernandez. The latter signed with the Mariners from the Blue Jays last offseason.
