Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox: Odds, Prediction
The Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox kick off a four-game series at Fenway Park tonight, with first pitch set for 7:15 PM ET. This Apple TV+ exclusive matchup marks the first of seven meetings between the clubs this year, with a return three-game set scheduled for early May in Detroit.
The Red Sox return home following a tough series loss in Minnesota against the red-hot Twins. Despite that stumble, Boston has played better ball recently, having secured series wins against both the Brewers and Cardinals.
Meanwhile, Detroit has found its groove. The Tigers are winners of six straight at home – a sharp turnaround after being swept in a four-game set in Minneapolis by those same Twins who gave the Red Sox fits.
The MLB odds board has the hometown BoSox as -125 favourites.
MLB Betting Analysis
Expect typical, mid-April Boston weather at first pitch, with temperatures forecasted in the mid-50s.
The Red Sox’ 7-11 straight-up record nearly mirrors their 6-12 record against the run line. Driven by a combination of starting pitching struggles and recent offensive surges, Red Sox games have hit the over 10 times in 18 games.
The Tigers (10-9) also possess a similar record against the run line (9-10). However, Detroit has been a lower-scoring squad, with the over hitting just eight times in 19 games.
Detroit Tigers
Former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize, now 28, takes the mound for the Tigers to open the series. Mize has sandwiched one poor start against the Twins between two solid outings against the Diamondbacks and Marlins.
Historically, Mize has been less comfortable on the road, posting a career 12-13 record with a 4.25 ERA. In a relatively small sample size, he has also struggled against current Red Sox hitters, who have tagged him for 15 hits, including five doubles and two home runs, in just 44 at-bats.
Offensively, Detroit is being propelled by two standouts: 21-year-old rookie phenom Kevin McGonigle, who just signed a massive eight-year, $150 million extension on Wednesday, and catcher Dillon Dingler. McGonigle has already amassed a 1.2 bWAR, hitting north of .300, while Dingler is currently tied for the team lead in home runs and leads the club in RBI.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox counter with their marquee free-agent acquisition, left-hander Ranger Suarez. Suarez, who emerged as an underrated gem during his tenure with the Phillies, had a rocky start to his Boston career, surrendering four earned runs in each of his first two outings.
However, his last start in St. Louis was a masterpiece: six shutout innings with six strikeouts. Suarez will look to maintain that momentum against a Tigers lineup he has historically handled; Detroit hitters are just 8-for-35 lifetime against him with a meager .621 OPS.
The Boston offence is currently paced by right fielder Wilyer Abreu and first baseman Willson Contreras. Both have already launched three homers, recorded double-digit RBIs and boast an OPS north of .930 with a bWAR of at least 1.0.
Who Will Win Tigers vs. Red Sox?
The Red Sox return from a 3-3 road trip and benefit from a scheduled off-day yesterday. Conversely, the Tigers arrive in Boston in the midst of a winning streak but without a day of rest.
I expect the Tigers’ offence to start sluggishly, allowing Suarez to capitalize with a second consecutive quality start. Expect the Red Sox bats to jump on Mize early, utilizing their historical success against him in a hitter-friendly park, and for Boston to prevail 5-2.
