Odds and Bets: Berrios Helps Blue Jays Bounce Back
Blue Jays vs Orioles: Jays Bounce Back
The Toronto Blue Jays are in the midst of an important series with their divisional rivals the Baltimore Orioles. The latter are significantly higher in the standings but if Toronto can take the series, at least a message is sent to a close rival, in addition to cutting the deficit somewhat. Nothing went according to plan on Tuesday night, as Baltimore crushed Toronto 11-6, earning 17 hits in the process.
For Wednesday’s second game, the Jays send Jose Berrios to the mound. He’s been playing excellent baseball as of late, having won four in a row, including against the Tampa Bay Rays and the Houston Astros. In fact, he’s only given up a total of five runs in those four wins. If Toronto is going to strike back at Baltimore, especially after the spanking suffered on Tuesday, they’ll need Berrios to continue his strong play.
Best Bet: Blue Jays on the moneyline
Canadian Grand Prix: Lance’s Stroll
This weekend sees Formula 1 drivers rev up their engines at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the classic Canadian Grand Prix. It’s always an exciting weekend in the city of Montreal, with festivities in abundance, pretty cars to look at and take pictures of, and of course the big event on Notre-Dame island, a stone’s throw away from downtown.
Adding to the excitement is of course the Canadian presence at the race, Lance Stroll, who pilots for legendary British car manufacturer Aston Martin. Stroll’s record at the Canadian Grand Prix is not what one could consider the envy of any F1 driver A ninth-place finish in 2017 (with Williams), retired in 2018 (Williams), ninth in 2019 (Racing Point), and 10th in 2022 (Aston Martin). One would think that Stroll and his team want a good race on home soil for once. His Teammate Fernando Alonso is third in the driver standings, so that’s a good chance at a strong race.
Best Bet: Both Aston Martins finish in the Top Six
Stampeders vs Redblacks: Stamps Find Their Groove
Week 1 in the CFL saw some encouraging and disappointing performances from two teams that lost their contests. The Ottawa Redblacks opened their campaign in Montreal and fought valiantly in a 19-12 defeat. A loss is still a loss, but considering how terrible the club was in 2022, at least the scoreboard looked decent. Conversely, the Calgary Stampeders opened at home to the BC Lions and looked limp in a 25-15 loss.
Now those clubs face each other for Ottawa’s home opener. Logic suggests that since the Redblacks are at home and played okay last week, they should have the advantage. But Calgary simply is the better team, however mediocre they looked in their Week 1 opener. It’ll be close.
Best Bet: Redblacks with +4.5 spread
