Since being called up by the Toronto Blue Jays from the Triple A’s Buffalo Bisons, relief pitcher Nate Pearson has put solid numbers. What does his success mean to the club and the pecking order in the rotation?

Nate Pearson’s Strong Numbers

So far in 2023, since being brought back to the majors in late April, Pearson has partaken in no fewer than 11 contests for a total of 14.0 innings of work. Although he hasn’t registered a save this season, his ERA is a brilliant 1.47 and he has struck out 14 batters. Those are exactly the kind of numbers coaches want to see when needing someone to hold the fort on the mound for an inning to two.

Bastl brings up a salient point. Could Pearson be next in line in case fellow relief pitcher Jordan Romano does not live up to the billing?

“This is kind of what they (Blue Jays) have been waiting on. He’s been kind of up and down. He’s had some injury problems, but when they draft him they had no doubt he had the arm for it.”

Gibbons agrees that some past relief efforts have been shaky, but Pearson’s sheer talent and the force with which he can launch the ball could very lead him to become a closer in the rotation.

“To harness that power takes a while and he’s finally doing that. I know they’re excited about that and it gives them one more weapon that (as a team) you gotta have”
