Bo Bichette
Bichette has been sidelined since Sept. 7 with a sprained left knee. The 27-year-old, two-time All Star, was injured the day before on a play at home plate. He was initially placed on the 10-day injured list.
Bichette was in Dallas on Monday afternoon where he was examined by Dr. Dan Cooper. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said there was nothing new to report and the exam was part of the recovery process.
“It doesn’t change our thinking,” Schneider said before Monday night’s 2-1 extra innings win over the Tampa Bay Rays. “It gives him and us some clarity.”
Playoff push
Toronto has the best record in the American League at 88-62. They hold a three-game lead over the Tigers in the AL race and a five-game lead over the Yankees for the AL East lead. The Jays are favoured to win both the American League (+300) and the division (-5000).
The team has said they will be patient when it comes to Bichette’s injury. Schneider could opt to start Bichette at DH before he returns on defence.
“In a perfect world, if he can come back and play short, great,” Schneider said. “We’ll see how this goes. With how he’s moving, it seems to me that hitting will be a little bit in front of everything else. I think we’ll know more tomorrow or the next day, but if we can get his bat back, hell yeah, I’ll take that.”
Bichette is having a strong year as he looks to cash in on a huge contract in the off-season. In 139 games, he’s batting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs. As of Tuesday, Bichette leads the majors in both hits (181) and doubles (44).
