MLB Odds: Blue Jays’ Berrios close to returning; Barger, Kirk progressing through their rehabs
The Toronto Blue Jays are getting healthier.
George Springer and Trey Yesavage came back from injury this week and even more reinforcements are nearing a return, with Jose Berrios, Addison Barger and Alejandro Kirk all progressing well through their rehabs, according to manager John Schneider.

Jose Berrios
Berrios is believed to be the closest to returning after missing the entire 2026 campaign up to this date with an elbow injury. The 31-year-old right-hander could return as early as Sunday against the Minnesota Twins.
Berrios is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons on Friday before a decision is made. The Blue Jays currently have their Sunday starter listed as TBD, while Patrick Corbin will get the ball on Friday and Dylan Cease will start on Saturday.
Berrios’ last game action was on Tuesday with the Bisons. He allowed five runs, including two homers, in four innings of work. The velocity on his fastball averaged just 91.9 m.p.h., falling below last season’s career-low of 92.5 m.p.h.
Addison Barger
Barger will be on the field to run the bases Friday before playing for Single-A Dunedin on Saturday, Schneider told reporters on Thursday.
The 26-year-old outfielder has been out with an ankle injury since April 5. Barger has struggled to replicate last year’s breakout season, recording just one hit in 19 at-bats in 2026.
Alejandro Kirk
Kirk looks like the furthest away of the trio. Toronto’s starting catcher has just begun his first steps to returning to action as he has resumed throwing at the team’s player development complex in Dunedin.
The 27-year-old two-time all-star suffered a fractured thumb in his catching hand five games into the season. At the time, Schneider said Kirk would miss at least six weeks.
In 20 at-bats this season, Kirk has been limited to just three hits with one home run.
Toronto Blue Jays
Toronto’s injury-riddled start to the season has them off to a 14-17 start. The glass half empty outlook is that they sit fourth in the AL East, but there are positives to look at.
Outside of the Yankees, the AL East has largely struggled this year and the Blue Jays can make up a lot of ground in the standings as they’ve only played one series against the division this year.
Toronto’s record is also right around where it was this time last year when the team was much healthier. If the Jays can get some players back in the lineup, this is still a team that should be considered a playoff contender.
The Blue Jays are back in action Friday night in Minnesota as they play the second of a four-game series against the Twins.
