The Blue Jays have held their ground in the AL East, though the Yankees and Red Sox continue to close the gap. The Tigers remain comfortable in the AL Central, while the AL West is turning into the division to watch, with the Astros clinging to a three-game lead and the Rangers suddenly charging into the Wild Card hunt.

In the National League, the Giants have emerged as the week’s surprise, keeping their post-season hopes alive with a surge of wins.

How did the MLB odds change this week?

The drama in the AL West has forced oddsmakers to adjust. Houston’s price has shortened to -300 to win the division, reflecting its ability to hold off both Seattle and Texas. The Rangers, though still on the outside looking in, are now given a 16 per cent chance of reaching the playoffs according to ESPN, which is remarkable considering they were all but left for dead just 10 games ago. The Mariners’ inconsistency has left them vulnerable, and the Astros remain favourites despite not looking entirely dominant.

Over in the AL East, Toronto’s grip on the division has loosened. The Blue Jays are now -275 to win the East, down from stronger odds a week ago. The Yankees, buoyed by Aaron Judge’s continued ascent up the franchise’s all-time home run list, have shortened to +350, making them a live option for bettors who believe New York’s recent form can sustain.

Player markets saw notable movement this week as well. Kyle Schwarber’s four-homer game (the third of the MLB season) has vaulted him into serious NL MVP conversation. At +450, Schwarber trails Shohei Ohtani, who remains the heavy favourite at -1000. With 49 home runs and 119 RBIs, Schwarber’s case is strengthening, particularly if Philadelphia closes strong.

The National League Rookie of the Year race has become especially intriguing. Braves catcher Drake Baldwin was the betting favourite at -110, thanks to his .800-plus OPS and strong all-around play. But Cubs rookie pitcher Cade Horton has surged to -105 from +140 after a dominant August, where he posted a 1.20 ERA. Horton’s 9-4 record, 2.92 ERA and improving peripherals (3.8 FIP) suggest he is closing fast. If he finishes strong, voters may give the edge to a pitcher who has stabilized Chicago’s rotation down the stretch.

Best MLB futures bet to lock in right now: Cade Horton to win NL Rookie of the Year (-105)

This is the time to buy in on Cade Horton. Baldwin has been steady all year, but Horton is coming on when voters are paying the closest attention. Baldwin is on a team that won’t make the playoffs, and Horton is. Horton’s recent head-to-head with Baldwin was a showcase moment (five no-hit innings), and Horton’s 20 starts have proven he can handle the grind. With three weeks left, a couple more quality outings could flip the race entirely. Horton moved from +140 to -105 after his start against Baldwin and the Braves. Don’t let this price get even shorter – take it now.

MLB futures prediction: Philadelphia Phillies to win the 2025 World Series (+750)

The Phillies have been hovering near the top of the National League all year, but their World Series odds at +750 remain enticing. Philadelphia recently added Walker Buehler, who brings postseason pedigree (he owns a 3.04 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 94.2 playoff innings) to a rotation that lost Zack Wheeler.

The bats have also proven clutch, hitting .285 with an .845 OPS in “close and late” situations. With Citizens Bank Park ready to ignite in October, this feels like a team poised for another deep run, and at these odds, the Phillies are a smart futures play.
