It was reported on Wednesday that Ponce will travel to Los Angeles for an in-person evaluation with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache. A decision will then be made on surgery.

The news comes a day after Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Ponce has a sprained right ACL and is set to miss a “pretty significant chunk of time.”

Ponce, who signed a three-year, $30 million contract in the off-season, suffered the injury on Monday in his first MLB start since 2021. He fell to the ground while chasing a ground ball and had to be carted off the field.

The 31-year-old finished with three strikeouts and a walk while allowing one earned run over 2.1 innings in the series-opening game against the Colorado Rockies, a 14-5 Jays loss.

Ponce and was added to Toronto’s injured list on Tuesday and fellow right-hander Lazaro Estrada was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move.

ElAttache has treated some of the biggest athletes in the world, including Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant, Aaron Rodgers and Shohei Ohtani.

Toronto Blue Jays

The Ponce injury overshadowed Toronto’s season-opening three-game sweep over the Athletics.

Blue Jays pitchers, in particular, were dominant in that series. Toronto’s 50 strikeouts set an MLB record for most Ks in the first three games of the season and it also matched a franchise record for most strikeouts in a single series.

Outside of the first game against the Rockies, the Blue Jays have looked every bit like the World Series contender they were expected to be. Toronto bounced back with a 5-1 win over Colorado on Tuesday, improving to 4-1 on the season.

The Blue Jays enter Wednesday tied for the Yankees for top spot in the AL East. That makes it seem like great value to take Toronto to win the division at +300, while New York is pegged at +140. The longtime AL East rivals don’t meet until they play a four-game set in the Bronx from May 18-21.
