Major League Baseball recently awarded its monthly honours. Toronto Blue Jays third basemen Matt Chapman is the American League Player of the Month for April. Chapman boasted a remarkable .384 batting average, five home runes, and 21 runs batted in. What do “Gibby” and Bastl have to say about the incredible player?
Of course, don’t forget to check out the American League, National League, interleague, and other props for all your MLB action.
Matt Chapman Is the Best Defender
When asked where Toronto’s star player ranks among third baseman in the league, Gibbons doesn’t mince words.
“Gosh, he’s right at the top. He’s gotta be the best defender out there. He didn’t with the Golden Glove last year and that’s a mystery.”
The former coach acknowledges that there is stiff competition as to who can claim the top spot, citing Rafael Devers in Boston and Houston’s Alex Bregman in the American League as excellent players at the position. As for the National League, the Braves have Austin Riley, whereas the Cardinals benefit from the excellent play of Nolan Arenado.
“Let’s put it this way. He’s in a good class, his timing couldn’t be more perfect. He’s going to deserve that nice reward he gets next year.”
Chapman’s Contract Season
Speaking of that “nice reward,” Bastl brings up the point that Chapman is in a contract season. That, of course, brings up the inevitable questions. Most notably, should he sign now or have his team negotiate some more after putting in more All-Star-worthy stats?
John Gibbons doesn’t believe the coveted player would sign now. He’ll ride it out and make a ton of money when the time comes. In an ironic twist, the Blue Jays have a nice problem insofar as they’ll be negotiating contracts with plenty of top-quality talent in the next year or two (Chapman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Bo Bichette).
“He’ll (Chapman) test the market and make someone happy.”
