Ryder Cup: PGA Golf Odds And Predictions
Ryder Cup PGA History
There’s no question that the four major championships – the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship – are the biggest tournaments every year on the PGA Tour. However, the event that American and European golfers and fans get most passionate about is the biennial Ryder Cup.
A roster of 12 Americans, captained by Jim Furyk, and 12 Europeans, captained by Thomas Bjorn, do battle from Sept. 28-30 at Le Golf National in Paris. Eight players on each side qualified through points and the captains made four choices each.
Friday and Saturday consist of morning and afternoon sessions of foursomes (alternate shot) and four-ball (better ball). Not every player on each roster will compete in those (eight in each session), but Sunday is head-to-head match play singles. There are 28 points available and matches can and will be halved. To win the Ryder Cup, a team must earn at least 14.5 points. Should it end in a tie, the reigning Ryder Cup champion keeps it – that’s the USA, which beat Europe 17-11 two years ago at Hazeltine in Minnesota.
The Americans are -147 favourites at Sports Interaction to win the Ryder Cup with Europe at +135 and a draw at +1100 – there have been two draws, last in 1989 in England.
The Americans Are Better On Paper
Both rosters are loaded, but every single player on Team USA was ranked in the world Top 25 entering the Tour Championship. How good is Furyk’s team on paper? His four wild-card choice were Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and red-hot younger guys Bryson DeChambeau and Tony Finau – the latter two are rookies in this event.
Brooks Koepka (+497) and Dustin Johnson (+501) are the favourites to be the leading American points scorer (the most anyone could score is 5) as well as +800 each to be the top overall scorer. Woods is +800 to lead the USA and +1800 for all scorers. Tiger, making his first Ryder Cup appearance since 2012, is 13-17-3 overall in the event but 4-1-2 in singles. Team USA hasn’t won a Ryder Cup on European soil since 1993 in England.
Bjorn’s European side has five rookies but also two of the best Ryder Cup players ever in Spain’s Sergio Garcia and England’s Ian Poulter. They were both captain’s picks along with Paul Casey and Henrik Stenson. Garcia is 19-11-7 in this event and Poulter an incredible 12-4-2 and 4-0-1 in singles.
The favourites to be the European leading scorer are world No. 1 Justin Rose (+451) and Rory McIlroy (+452). Poulter is +1000 and Garcia +1200. This century, Europe has won every Ryder Cup except 2008 and two years ago.
Bettors at Sports Interaction also can bet on the overall country winner for each day – USA slight favourite in both – and of course head-to-head on each match once the pairings are named by the captains. There will be hundreds of prop options overall.
Ryder Cup Predictions
The Americans have the star power, but Europe has home-course advantage and a few heavyweights who thrive under this pressure. Europe wins the Ryder Cup and Garcia salvages a down year by leading all players in points (+2500).
