Wide Receiver Cory Watson is a Concordia school product who plays for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Cory Watson was selected ninth overall in the 2010 Canadian Football League draft and is entering his second year with the team.
Last season Cory Watson saw limited playing time however during his time was able to make a modest effort in his rookie season, catching seventeen passes for 277 yards and one touchdown.
During training camp Cory Watson continued his excellent playing abilities and impressed the coaching staff and was able to land himself a starting job amongst the receivers.
Today Cory Watson has emerged as an upcoming player for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Currently playing through five games; Cory has received the ball 24 times for 287 yards with his longest play so far at 34 yards.
He currently leads all of the Winnipeg Blue Bomber receivers including six-year veteran receiver, Terrence Edwards who is in second at 272 yards.
But stats aside, Cory Watson has done a lot to improve his game and become a noticeable threat to the deep ball. His biggest game was in week three against the Calgary Stampeders where he hauled in six catches for 98 yards.
During practices Cory Watson applies himself to the fullest, attempting to break away from the defenders on every play and extend himself towards the ball at each possible chance.
So far Cory Watson is at ninth place out of the top ten receivers in the league through five weeks and appears to have no indication of slowing down. Right now Cory is projected to reach just over the 1,000 receiving yard mark.
Another receiver that the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have high hopes on is Terence-Jeffers Harris or TJ Harris as most call him. TJ Harris is a sophomore with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after signing with the club as a free agent last off-season.
In the month of July 2010, TJ Harris amassed 21 receptions for 317 yards and caught three touchdowns, averaging 4 catches for 63.4 yards a game. He was well on his way to notching his name on the Rookie of the Year ballot card.
An ankle injury suffered in the July 31 game against the Calgary Stampeders, TJ Harris would sit on the sidelines before making his return in October against the B.C. Lions. His numbers since returning from injury tapered off and the explosiveness that TJ Harris once had was lost.
Enter the post-season TJ Harris would work on building his body up with hopes of being selected in the upcoming 2011 NFL Draft. That dream did not happen and TJ Harris’ name was not called during the draft, prompting him to return to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and they could not have been happier.
Through five games TJ Harris has amassed 272 yards, third best amongst Winnipeg receivers and two touchdowns, both against the Toronto Argonauts in week four.
The extra weight that TJ Harris put on in the off-season and slowly took off has allowed him to beef his physique up and survive the tough tackling expected within the CFL.
TJ Harris currently sits eleventh overall on receiving yards and is projected to reach around the 1,000 yard receiving mark.
His route running abilities and strong upper-body makes him a big second-down threat that can run over defenders for first downs. Then you add in some great hands and making plays happen on his own you have a great receiver in the making here.
While the future for TJ Harris is unknown as he may still want to test the NFL next season, the club and fans will undoubtedly enjoy Cory Watson’ presence and if they get TJ Harris locked down to a contract, could prove to make a dueling receiving force that defenders will hate to have to cover.
