Hamilton Tiger-Cats QB Matt Shiltz’s Long-Term Injury
Things have gone from bad to worse for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Backup quarterback Matt Shiltz, who was filling in for big offseason signing Bo Levi Mitchell, was injured in Week 6’s game against the Edmonton Elks. A leg injury means he’ll miss at least six games, as per the club.
As we approach Week 7 in the CFL, check out our odds.
Matt Shiltz is out, Rookie Taylor Powell is in for Tiger-Cats
The 37-29 victory over the Elks in Edmonton came at a price. Hamilton won’t have the services of Matt Shiltz for at least six games. Rookie Taylor Powell filled in for Shiltz to finish the contest. He’ll make his first start in the CFL when the Ticats host the undefeated Toronto Argonauts on Friday.
Furthermore, Hamilton made the acquisition of veteran Antonio Pipkin on Tuesday. The 27-year-old has some CFL experience, having played in 27 games from 2017 to 2022.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are currently 2-3, tied for second place in the East Division with the Montreal Alouettes and Ottawa Redblacks. The Alouettes hold the tiebreaker off a superior point differential. Toronto is currently the clear-cut favourite in the East, but the rest of the division is in a wild battle.
So far the 2023 CFL season had been a harbinger of doom for starting quarterbacks. The Saskatchewan Roughriders lost Trevor Harris long-term in Week 6 as well. In Week 5, the Ottawa Redblacks lost Jeremiah Masoli for the entire 2023 campaign after he had literally missed 12 months of football.
